Anyone know of a relative inexpensive alternative to hughesnet internet service now that they are going to spot coverage.

Received a message from hughesnet friday that they were no longer provide mobile service and were upgrading to 9000 series modems and a new satellite that will only provide spot coverage. No longer in the mobile business as of October 31st.

That information is incorrect. As long as you do not allow Hughes to move you to the 9000 modem you will be able to use your DW7000 or HN7000S (highly recommended) just as you have in the past. If you say no to the "upgrade" that will be the end of it.
As an aside, Hughes has NEVER been in the mobile business. They sell service to home users only. Many choose to take the service on the road. Hughes also sells service to resellers (VAR's...Value Added Resellers) who actually do provide mobile service to 10's of thousands of users.

It would be any Hughesnet direct customer who is taking the service mobile.

Darn, that will only leave them about 7 more satellites for their HN7000S users to point toward. Off hand, 83, 89, 91, 99, 113, 117, 127. I believe that there are a few others as well but these are the ones that our customers are currently using.

I did ask them if there were other satellites that they could put me on and they said no. I don't know what is going on with that bunch but they seem to want everyone on the new system. If you know how I could get onto another sat let me know!

Sign up for service through one of the resellers that cater to mobile users.

Are you saying they are decommissioning the satellite you are on and refuse to assign you to another?

That appears to be what he is saying but that's not Hughes' position. On the Hughesnet users forum Community-powered support for Hughes a user was moved from 72 to 99 and he is a happy camper. Maybe you should register there and post your question. This is by no means a mobile forum but questions about mobile are welcome. I will be there to help push the issue along. If all else were to fail you could cancel your Hughes service and we could sign you up through a VAR but there is no reason to believe that this will be necessary.

I discontinued my HugheNet service and now just use a Verizon MiFi2200 wireless modem. The speed is much better and it costs a lot less.
You can also use a smart phone to connect to the internet (called tethering). Most of the new smart phones are capable of tethering up to 5 computers/devices. The carriers charge a monthly fee and of course you need to be in an area with cellular service.
The Verizon coverage is much greater than it used to be. Over half the country is now 4G (4th generation) and they are improving it every month. Lots of the country that previously had little to no coverage is now up to 3G service.
