I bought a 120v AC television that runs on 12v DC

I just bought a 24" Insignia LED TV from Best Buy. Its not marketed or sold as a 12v TV. But when I got home and opened it up, upon inspection of the power supply, it is actually a switching adapter from 120v AC to 12v DC.

Can I wire it directly to a 12V DC circuit in my bedroom? It would make things much easier than having to run an extension cord to my power inverter in the living room.

I would be concerned about the effect of voltage significantly lower or higher than 12v. If you can figure that out, it seems like a good idea.

I did thus with a 28 inch Insignia TV. I used s 12v power plug/cable from a Jensen 12v TV. You might consider looking for a similar plug/cable online that will provide the correct voltage/amps

no strange. i got a samsung 22 inch tv a few years ago. the output of the adapter was 14v. i cut the adapter off and connected the cord to coach 12v directly. it has been working perfectly.

a side note, i installed an on/off switch between the source and the cord. when i am not watching tv, i turn the switch off to cut off the standby power drain no matter how small it is.

Good idea. I didn't think of that.

EXCELLENT: Yes, its very simple, but does quire some basic electrical skills.

I cut the plug off the power supply and wire it directly to 12 volts. The key is to make sure you have the polarity on the plug correct or you just turned your brand new TV into junk.

I wrote a short article on this a couple years ago.

very nice writeup in the link that was how i did... in case somebody messed it up, just go get a new or used tv main board, which is typically 1/4 of the cost of a tv. replacing the board is a simple job.

You can find the 12v adapter/cable online for a Jensen 12v TV for about $10. I'd consider that option. Found this one at RV parts nation. I use the same adapter from my 19 Jensen TV to power a 28 inch insignia TV in my motorhome for over a year now without issues.

I have two Insignia TV's in my coach and if they could be run on 12v from the house battery that'd be pretty awesome. But from the looks of it, your TV has a 110v AC to 12v DC converter built into the power cord. Mine have straight 110v cords that plug directly into the back.

But now I wonder if the 12v converter is inside the TV and if it could be tapped into. Anyone familiar with this?

I have seen models with the 120v direct and others with 12v to 120 power block. When I went searching for a TV I looked at the power connection. I settled on the 28 inch that would fit. I did see a 32 inch as well but it was too big for the TV spot I wanted. The tvs larger than 32 inches had the 120v connection instead of the 12v
