Hey Brad, where are you? You can't possibly be out of service area?
I was wondering if more subscribers are pulling the speeds down.
That's what I see happening to Verizon in different SoCal populated areas. I can get 30 to 40 mb/sec during the day or late night, then drops down to 1 mb/sec in the evening. Everybody's watching one of the 15 sources of tv/movies in the evening.
Happy Trails,
Bill

Gen5 Update and VOIP
Just an update on Gen5. I've had my system, same setup as Brad, for a couple of months. Speeds have consistently been 40+mbps down and in the 1.5-3+ mbps range on uploads.
But voice has been elusive due to Jitter which is the nature of satellite communications.
Hughesnet has offered their home users a VOIP solution for some time using an ATA VOIP device. It just became available in the last couple of weeks for the commercial (portable) part of Hughes.
I got mine last week and have been parked near Muddy Gap, WY this week. The Inno Media ATA setup was quick and the call quality is flawless. It is an additional $29.95 a month but worth it if you park in places with no other means of voice communication. Basically the VOIP with Hughesnet has some type of side channel for the voice so it does not interfere with your download/upload speeds.

I don't think that's accurate. All web "speed meters" are not created equally.
Here are my results: HughesNET Gen 5 1st Evaluation.

Techwriter for consistency I use speedtest.net. For the most part trying to compare apples to apples. Primary item to watch on speedtest is the changing of the test server. I ran the first two of your test servers. Speedof.me failed pretty badly with a ping of 2500+ms.
Testmy.net had results as below.
Speedtest.net was similar.
Next test is a VOIP test that is using backend software that is pretty standard in the VOIP arena. www.whichvoip.com. Underlying software is from BCS. Bit hard to see but 45.5 down and 3.7 up.
Lastly I tried running Fast.com which is the test for Netflix. At least on my S&B Xfinity cable system I usually see slightly lower speeds than Speedtest.
Also while I was doing these test runs I was on a Hughesnet Voice call and didn't see any impact to the test results compared to what I saw previously without the VOIP ATA attached to the system.
Nice writeup on your site. I always point folks to your website for any Dish questions. Good to see someone writing about Gen5 and dispelling some of the bad press associated with the previous iterations of Hughesnet.

So what is the final verdict on this system?
The OP seemed to disappear on informing everyone now that it has been more than a year of using this system

I use speedof.me for speed testing.
It isn't perfect, but AFAIK it isn't owned by the ISPs and seems to provide results that are more conservative - in line with what the speeds feel like.

Daniel you can see my bit of review above. Mine has been working flawlessly with download speeds much faster than advertised and uploads on target. With the addition of VOIP for the mobile setup market, Hughesnet considers us commercial accounts, I can really be off grid with no other telephony hookup. You may also want to check out the RVSatelliteInternet FaceBook group or the VAR that Brad and I bought from, Barb Nolley, at mobileinternetsatellite.com.

Fast.comis part of Netflix. This test is becoming ing the defacto test for real speeds. Many others will give you inflated results. If you are having trouble getting Netflix they require a test on fast.com.

mobileinternetsatellite.com.
Thanks, I like the new VOIP aspect to it.
Maybe they will come out with one that mounts to the roof even if you have to go up there and adjust it manually

In doing a little research on youtube this guy wasn't too happy with it as of a few weeks ago. maybe just sour grapes.
He had a residential hook-up but I can't imagine that having any effect as a satellite is a satellite.

Do you still have daily download limits (except during the early a.m. hours)? With the previous Hughesnet system, the effective download limit was ~500MB/day which isn't sufficient for streaming much video.
