We now have a stationary KingDome on the roof and DirecTV subscription.

When we travel a distance away from home and turn on the TV we usually have no picture and have to "call extension xxx" or do some resets. This does not always fix the problem and talking with an agent does not always resolve the problem.

So......if we upgrade to an "in motion" dish (Winegard, KingDome or KVH) and leave it ON while traveling.......will the TV be ready to go when we park, after driving 50 to 500 miles?

Or......do we have to make more phone calls and/or do receiver resets?

Thanks

If you have an "in-motion" satellite receiver you do not need to keep the unit "on" while you are driving if no one is watching the television. The "in motion" receiver can be used to watch television while the vehicle is in motion. It will track your provider satellites; Dish or Direct. If you have an in motion satellite receiver, the unit must be programmed for the system that you are subscribed ; either Dish or Direct. When you get to your destination you can turn your "in motion" satellite receiver on and it will "find" your satellites within a few minutes.

Generally.. If it works when you leave the house it will work when you park the rig.

HOWEVER there are a few things you need to know..

First.. I assume you are running direcTV. Since you have a dome I will skip the entire "Limits of Domes" speech cause.. you already know that.

One thing to remember is your network stations (Less you subscribe to distant network) may not be there when you arrive.

You didn't mention if you fail to get ANY channel or if it's only your local/network channels which disappear. Local stations are spot beamed to your home area and you will loose them once you get a couple hundred miles or so from home but the other channels should be there.

If you search the forum, you'll find countless threads on the frustration RV owners have with customer service agents with both Directv and Dish.

If you're thinking of replacing your current dome, do your homework and research the pros and cons. For example, if you think you'll ever want to go with HD and stay with DirecTv... no dome will do it. We have the Winegard Slimline Travlr 3005 and love it.

Good Luck,

Rick

I have left home with my in-motion on and traveled across Washington, Idaho and Montana. Had no problems. Even when I shut it off and restarted it. But I have had trouble in eastern Montana starting it up cold, meaning not having it on while traveling there. I have direct which I have had less problems with than I did with Dish.

Scooter,

I believe I understand what you are asking. Because we have the same issue, let me explain. We have two receivers one is for the motorhome use; the other is always at the house plugged into the home system. We vacation in the motorhome so the receiver is taken out and stored along with the card in the house not plugged into anything. So every time we pull the receiver out and set it up in the motorhome we usually have to call direct TV and plug it into a source in the house to get channels again.
If this is what you are describing then it’s not your dish but the way direct TV works. We also have a Winegard in-motion sat dish and I really love it. I do get bored sitting in the passenger seat while my husband drives so I will flip on the inverter and turn on the sat dish and watch direct TV from the couch in the motorhome.
Good Luck,
MB
