Ipad information source on the road???
Those that have an Ipad how do you get information to it while driving down the road and no Wi-Fi?? Some have cellular capability but do you have to keep it activated all the time or can you suspend it until your next trip? Thanks

Think you can turn it on and off by the month but for the convenience of having access whenever we need it for $30/mo, I just leave it on all the time. Additionally, when checking bank or credit cards, even if WiFi is available, I switch it off and use the cellular data. Then I don't have to worry about wifi network security.

There is no contract with them. You can pay so much a month and they have like 5 different plans.
250 mb 24 hrs $5.00
250 mb 30 days $14.95
1 gig 3 months $25.00 no auto renew
3 gig 30 days LTE $30.00
5 gig with hotspot 30 days $50.00
These are with ATT. I don't know verizon plans

We are pondering getting an Ipad. We have a Verizon plan with 10 Gig data which includes two smart phones and our MiFi hotspot device (we use it at home and on the road for all our internet access). According to Verizon, I can add the Ipad for another $10 per month.

Lot easier to read and type on an IPad vs our smart phones.

I use a Verizon wireless hotspot, so multiple devices in the coach have Internet access.

If you have a wifi only ipad then you could make your phone a hotspot or connect it to a mifi device. Then connect to the internet.
If you do not own one and are thinking of using the iPad for GPS purposes then you will need to get one with cellular capabilities. Mind you will not need to connect to the cellular service to use the GPS, the reason is that the cellular model has a GPS receiver built in and the wifi only does not.
Earlier in the year we purchased a mifi device (we have AT&T) service and used that when we travel. It worked great, the connection is a little better then the phone. We just finished a ten night trip to Georgia (from New Jersey) and we had LTE service for 80+% of the trip.

We live in a rural area with excellent cell coverage. We use a Verizon Wifi Hotspot for our iPads (2 of them). This way you don't have to pay for an extra cellphone, ie in the 3g/4g equipped iPad. We do py for 20 gB of data per month. So when travelling and you have good cell coverage then you have wifi for your iPad.

If the iPad does not have cellular service it will not act as a GPS, even if you have a separate hot spot. The iPad need to connect to cell towers in order for it to determine where it is.
We have one of each, one wifi only and the DW's with Verizon cellular. I think it's $20 or $30 per month to add it to your regular data plan.

Your statement is partial true. The WiFi iPad does NOT have a built-in GPS. The iPad with 3G/4G DOES have a built-in GPS. It does NOT need to connect to a cell tower to know where it is at... it uses the built-in GPS.

We have Verizon wireless with a small data package. 2gb per month. Both wife's and my phone have 4g, which by the way is very fast. I downloaded an app called Foxfi. It enables us to turn either phone into a secure wifi hotspot without any additional charges from Verizon. We've used the Foxfi app with ipad and laptops with great results. In areas where there's only 3g it works good, just not as fast. In a 4g area it's super fast. The couple of times we watched a netflix movie while camping we went over the 2gb monthly limit and just paid the extra for exceeding our data package limit. It was minimal as I remember.
