Ia will soon be living the RV life style and was wondering if the iPhone might not be a good phone to have since it apears to do google earth maps well and can conect to the internet via WIFI or cell. Of course it helps that it also does e mail music etc.
To you guys who have been out there a while --

The iphone is an interesting device and may be a bit too complicated for some folks.
The possible use of WiFi may have limitations with respect to range (signal strength) and service providers. I am thinking that ATT will not allow email/internet pass-thru via WiFi through another provider.
Go HERE for a very good description of the iphone and its features.

I've had my iPhone for several days now and I like it VERY MUCH! Will be very handy for the RV lifestyle.
It is NOT complicated - in fact it's the easiest cell phone device I've ever had! Menu system, like most Apple products, is very intuitive, not linear like others.
If there is an unsecured WiFi network available and you choose to connect, you're on the internet, just as though you had your laptop! AT&T has nothing to do with that particular feature.
Just to set the record straight, I'm not one of those die-hard Apple folks . . . the iPhone and an iPod are the only Apple products I own (although they make VERY nice computers - I opted for Dell, both at home and my laptop).

AT&T has no control over internet access via WiFi. If there's an access point nearby that you can connect to (open or you have the password), then you get email and web access at WiFi speeds. If there's no access point nearby, then the iPhone uses AT&T's EDGE network instead. Slower, but the transition is transparent to the user.

Some people think that the things that the iPhone does (over and above being a phone) is so good that they have hacked the software and the "phone" can be brought to life without ever activating the phone service and therefore avoid any monthly charges. Wi-fi internet will still work as well as the iPod, map and photo functions.

Actually, I don't think anyone has hacked the activation process yet. What they have done is activated the phone, then cancelled the AT&T contract immediately. There's a time window when you can cancel the contract without a penalty. But by that time, the phone's already enabled for other functions...
OTOH, unless you're usually in places where the AT&T coverage is bad, or you don't want a mobile phone at all, I don't see what the point is. The AT&T plans for the iPhone with unlimited data are cheaper than most of the unlimited data plans anyone else has.

No, Hacked. That's why I used that term. It may or may not be true, but do a Google search for iPhone hacked and see what you get. Here's one of those links.
