We're contemplating which cell service to switch to prior to going full-time. We hear that Cingular is dropping many of its RV customers because so many of their calls are made from "away" from the local area. Has anyone heard anything about this?
(Verizon is still on top of our list!)

This comes up every year or so and Verizon seems to always be at the top.

Had Cingular before and we dropped them. Not aware of any company dropping their customers, as was your question.

Was told that some (can't remember which) services require that 50%+ of your calls orginate from your 'home' area. Don't know what the penalty is, just FYI.

I too have Cingular nationwide and have not heard of this, in fact most of my usage is out of my home area, verizon is not an option here in Oklahoma as it is not a carrier in the state except down around the Red River where you can pick it up from Texas. One of my biggest problems is that analog is going away and digital is the only option, and out here in the South Central and Southwest you don't have much service without analog unless you are along an interstate or in a major town. Maybe one day.....

I have Verizon on my company supplied phone and the wife has Cingular on her phone. Both have nation-wide LD and Roaming. Never a thought or discussion about XX% of calls to be home based.

I will say that Cingular has far superior coverage in Texas and Oklahoma than does Verizon. She will have a signal on her phone and I have no service on my Verizon. Several of us at work are pushing to get Cingular, at least for the Texas based folks.

We run Verzion and use a 3 watt smoothtalker as a booster to the .5 watts the phone put out. In addition we use mobile office with national access to run our lap top. Computer cost $60.00 per month but can be turned of and on with a phone call

I've had Cingular for years and most of the calls I make are while I'm away RVing. I also use Cingular's GPRS/EDGE to connect my laptop to the internet and I use many megabytes per month away from my home area.

I had AT&T and when Cingular took over, I changed to them. I travel fulltime and all of my calls are out of my home area. I have never been questioned. It works well for me.

I think what you heard is just `hear say' and nothing more. It might be best to call the customer service of the particular company in question of your concerns.

Our cellular company of choice (and think to be the best) is Verizon Wireless.

Haven't heard of any thing like that. We have Cingular and use it quite a bit on Vacation on the road. Never a question.

A little off topic, butI have had Verizon for years. My old phone worked well with my laptop, but was slow. My new one does not connect to the internet. Neither Verizon nor AOL will admit to supporting internet connectivity, and even though Verizon sold me Mobile Office, it doesn't work for me. Thankfully many locations are now adding Wi-Fi.
