I cannot get to the back of my radio, it is built into the dash, so I think I may have to keep using my cell phone for gps.

This is just the craziest setup I have ever heard. You would think that the ports in the dash would work to update the radio. The radio has to be updated before the map can be updated. The radio itself says usb or cd audio file, which is what our next attempt will be, before we bag it all together. There are a few hundred files for the update. We originally tried this via an SD card, which was never recognized.

On my Kenwood/Garmin unit, there is a black box for Garmin where the antenna from roof hooks in and the output is a line that hooks up to the back of the back of the radio/display. This black box has an SD card reader that you can update your Garmin. Mine is a 2008, yours is new and it may be different! My Garmin Black Box is mounted just off the floor on the wall near your left foot. I updated the software and the map - I believe the software update was free, but the map update from Garmin was not free - it says how much on Garmin's website.
I hope this helps!
