I just wanted to let you guys know that Colleen received her KindleFIRE today and we were probably in the first wave of buyers to get the new fire from Amazon.

In regard to the fire let me say this; awesome, amazing, spectacular and I am breathless!

I am not sure how they pulled it off but the speed and graphics are amazing and the Internet connectivity using 802.11n is just as fast as my HP DV6 laptop. The machine is just the right size being larger than an iPodTouch and smaller than an iPad. Perhaps it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that an iPad has BUT what the KindleFIRE does have is more than enough to put a HUGE smile on the face of the DW.

I am a heavy Kindle user and I charge mine every other week and the DW goes 3 weeks. I have yet run into the "must charge" warning. The secret to long battery life is to keep the wifi/3G turned off unless you are downloading stuff.

Thanks for the review, DriVer. Dave's been eyeing those. He gave his iPodTouch to his sister because he didn't like the small screen. Maybe Santa will bring one for Christmas.

I believe the Fire has a LCD active display, not e-ink. Therefore, the battery life will not be weeks, but days, or maybe a day.
I think I read the Fire now handles ePub format. Since Kindle didn't do ePub, that was a decision for us to get a Nook Color, which has been totally satisfactory. There is a lot of stuff in ePub that can be downloaded for free, like Project Gutenberg books and lending of more current books from our library, which we use a lot. Didn't work on Kindle before. Does it now?

Nice to read about those positive reviews. Was planning on ordering one myself but DW told me DS/DD are buying if for me. Unfortunately, I won't see it till Christmas. What a bummer!

Got mine on Wednesday. It seems to be every thing they promised. I am surprised at how fast the email is. Nice display, easy to set up. I also have a color Nook which I also like.

Letting you know up front I do not have one. Been reading reviews for two days and I've learned: The screen is not big enough to do justice to magazine reading, which is one of its advertising plugs. Because it is not e-ink, battery life just for reading is about 8hrs, considerably less than previous Kindles. It's sort of like having a smart phone; I have to charge my BB almost nightly. If you can put up with both of those issues, the Fire may be for you. I'm delaying a purchase until I hear a bit more from people who've actually used them for a while.

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to e-readers. Since you already had a color Nook, what made you decide to get the KindleFire?
