Greetings folks

i am new to the forums. We just bought a 09 HR Imperial and we pick it up in October.

This will be our first MH. i have to admit im a bit intimidated with EVERYTHING...

back to the topic... im trying to get everything i need done before i head home with the coach. I have seen sat topics before but not the one in our coach.

here is my nOOb question... what do i do? lol

is it as simple as to call a sat company near my home? im thinking that i may need to call the dealer to get some numbers for the antenna?

is the KVH R6 any good?

What if i wanted to watch one tv with one program and another one with another?

im trying my best to limit my questions, because i have a ton, and find this forum and a few others VERY helpful.

i did do a search using what i put in the title, and didnt find anything

thanks to all in advance

I have the KVH r4 model ant and Direct tv at home. The Direct tv box (2) I have at home were placed in the front room and bedroom . I recieve the same channel as before except for my local channels. I use the batwing ant for local channel were ever we parked from Mich to Fl. Note must have clear shot of southern sky.

I have the KVH6 and it's a OK sat antenna, I like the system (King Dome)that I had in my old coach better.... Beginning able to watch separate channels has nothing to do with the sat, what you will need is two receiver boxes, one for each TV. Direct TV will charge you $5.00/mo for each box...Your local channels are located on sat 119, and are viewable if you are usually within 200 miles of your home address, while the other channels are on sat 101 (non-HD channels)... I'm assuming that you are piggy backing on your home acct, and don't have a seprate acct for the MH... This is the way I have mine set up, and it works well for me, the MH cost me $10.00/mo (two receivers).

You would not need two dishes unless you live in one of the few areas that get DTV local channels off the 72 or 95 sats.

Also, domes are rapidly becoming obsolete as more HD becomes available. I have and would suggest the Winegard sk3005 dish. If you really want a Kingdome, I can cut you a really good deal on the one I removed from my MH.

If you go with Dish Network at home you will need two dishes and only one with Direct TV. You can use a home receiver in your motorhome (just don't adverise the fact with your supplier). If you want to watch two satellite received channels you would need multiple receivers. (make sure your coach is wired for multiple receivers if you plan to do this) If your coach is supplied with a switch box (allows TV to be on Satellite, Cable, or antenna) you can then watch a TV on satellite and the second TV on Cable (if RV park provides) or over the air antenna. If you want to add network (ABC,NBC, CBS, PBS) to your satellite it can be done for about $10/month for East Coast (NEW YORK) and West Coast (Direct TV Los Angeles Dish Network San Francisco) A waiver must be sent to the provider along with copies of RV registration to qualify. Dish Network has a secondary provider called All American Direct due some legal issues from the past. If you get satellite at home these network stations will also be viewable. I like this feature as living on the West Coast I can watch the East Coast feeds 3 hours earlier.
I have the KVH system and Dish Network with distant networks and am satisfied.

Domes are not becoming obsolete at all. Period. If you are a DirecTV customer and you want their HD programming then you cannot use a dome, however, all of the other DirecTV programming is available with a dome. If you are a Dish Network customer most of the domes will work with every single channel that Dish Network broadcasts including HD.
I agree with you that the Winegard SK3005 for DirecTV or the SK1000 are excellent choices and will give better performance than any dome, but the dome is still a viable choice for many, many users.

One drawback to a dome is they generally only look at one Satellite at a time, so regardless of how many receivers you have you can only get the programming available on the satellite you are monitoring. Depending on your programming package this could be an issue. What I found with the older Kingdomes is that when you move back and forth between satellites you had the down time that your receiver needed to acquire the signal the new satellite, which in some cases was painstakingly slow. They may have rectified this in the newer models.

This can be true with Dish Network, but since all of the programming, except the HD programming, comes from one satellite there are no issues there with DirecTV.

My older KD would switch sats in 5-7 seconds but the receiver may take another 20-30 seconds to catch up. Frankly I've held off on upgrading my dome till the sat companies and dome companies get on the same page and look like they will stay there for a while. As much as I would hate to lose the in motion, the idea of pressing a button to set up rather than setting up the tri pod(5-10 minutes) is pretty inviting.
Additionally, some of the newer(Winegard carryout, etc.) switch sats so fast you can not tell the difference between them and a dish with all the LNBs you want on it. For those with a dual tuner, they still only look at one sat at a time so your 2nd TV viewing would be limited to channels on the same sat as the 1st TV.

Getting back to the original question...
The KVH R6 is set up for DirectTV by default, so call Directv and tell them you have your own equipment in an RV and need to establish service. [If you would prefer Dish, your R6 will have to be re-programmed by a KVh dealer to seek out the Dish satellites instead of DirectTV]. If your coach came with a satellite receiver already installed, you will need its model and serial number as well as the serial number from the Access Card installed in it (if any). If you do not have these items, DirectTV can supply them or send an installer who can do it. Make sure they understand you will be a mobile user - the regular house satellite installer probably won't work on an RV. In fact, if you need the receiver added, it might be easiest to have your RV dealer do it as part of the delivery process.

The R6 is KVH top of the line and even works in-motion (while driving down the road).

If you want to watch two different programs on two tvs, you need a satellite receiver on each tv. There is an extra charge for that. The R6 should have two cables coming from it, but whether HR actually ran those cables to both tvs is something to ask your dealer about.
