I've got a KVH Trackvision R6 system. While it works well, it makes an almost constant grinding noise while turned on. I've turned off the "dew shield" with no effect. KVH customer service was not helpful; got the usual "see an authorized service center". Anyone had this problem? Is it inherent to the system? It's a real distraction & I'm thinking of climbing up on the roof & removing the dome to take a look....any suggestions?

I just changed to a R6 after having a stationary...it is located above the bedroom...at nite when I change from ESPN to local channels it whirrs for about 20 seconds but when I go back to ESPN it makes less of a sound but for up to two minutes ( I'm assuming it is fine tuning...doesnt do it for all channels Jim k

While not that noisy for us it can still be annoying especially if a storm is coming through.
What we do is turn it off after it's locked on signal. Unless you need for it to change to anotehr satellite you're good to go until you move the rig.

After the sat has been found, turn off the tracking motor. You don't need it (unless you are moving). That is what the grinding noise is.

Turn off the tracking motor? I'm not sure I have that capability. If I turn off the R6 switch or on the remote it turns the system (and reception) off. My literature doesn't mention anything about turning it off - am I missing something? Mine is the system that's wired into the DircTV receiver....

Somewhere there is an On/Off switch for the KVH itself. It has nothing to do with the tv/satellite remote and should not affect the reception (the motor is powered separate from the receiver electronics). At least, that's how my R4SL is wired. I agree, though, that the dish needs to be able to move to switch from locals to national channels. Turning it off prohibits that.

I guess the R6 ST is set up differently; there's no switch other than the one on the receiver and the manual says "system must be on to receive a signal". I'll keep bugging KVH customer support.

The fact that you dont have a switch may be your problem....I put my bus away in storage under a roof and if I dont shut it off it runs for a very long time trying to find sat. also if I park under trees same thing happens.....actually when the installed the r6 they found that my switch was not getting enough voltage and that was part of my problem with the old unit jim k

Finally received a follow-up call from customer service today and was told the system (R6 ST) does NOT have an on/off switch, it's a single cable system from the DirecTV receiver to the dome. It's probably a software problem which has the sensitivity to movement set too high. Guess we'll tiptoe around the coach from now on. Thanks for the replies,
Keith
