Every once in a while a box will pop up asking for me to enter my laptop Product Key. I copied the 25 digit Key off the back of the computer but every time I enter it I get a message saying its wrong and please re-enter the correct one. I re-enter the same number a couple of times and get the same message. So I just cancel and go on.

Has anyone else had this same experience? If so were you ever able to get it to accept the number?

Where did you buy your computer? What does this pop-up show as a source of the question? What kind of laptop is this? How long have you had it and does it have the original operating system installed?

Hi Bill,

If I remember right it says its required for Windows use, but this has been going on for several months and I still have Windows. Senior Moments, I can't remember which ones but it seems this just happens when I try certain moves and only every couple of months or so - I'll take notes the next time it happens.

This is a HP Pavillion dv6000 that I purchased from Staples in early 2007 or 2008, it was just as Vista came out. And I'm still using Vista, too little computer knowledge to do anything else.

Don't know if I'd get any satisfaction by calling HP tech help or not, but probably they'd be talking way over my head with an explanation and not want to stay on the line long enough for me to write every thing down.

So far its not causing any problems with the laptop but since it says its the wrong Product Key I'm afraid sometime I'll get cut out of Windows.

Thanks for the response.

Allen

I would be prepared to take good notes the next time it pops up. What program is requesting the info, what is the exact message, what were you doing at that time or trying to access, etc. If you have not done a recent Windows Update you might want to try one to see if it forces this message.
If the timing is right I would call HP while the message was on your screen.

I just installed Windows seven and had to put in the product key, I didn`t right away and it prompted me to do so later which i did. Have you installed anything new on your puter?
Also sometimes you can get a good answer by doing a google search on the issue, something like " product key window comes up in vista "

No new programs downloaded, installed, or anything like that, just the normal automatic updates that Windows or HP does once a week. Will try the google search and see what happens.

If your computer is asking for a product key during an automatic update, it probably wants the product key for Windows (or possibly for Microsoft Office, depending on what the computer is trying to update), not for the computer itself. My bet is for Windows. You can verify that by doing a manual Windows update to see if that makes the box pop up.

The computer is probably trying to log onto the Microsoft download site and needs the key to verify you have a valid copy of Windows (or MS Office). You will need to find your original disc for Windows (or Office) to get the key. Some computer manufacturers don't supply discs when you buy a computer with preloaded software, so you will have to search through the documentation that came with your computer.

Most product keys are on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

Also, check here Product Key to see if it can help you.

Also, download Belarc Advisor. It has some good information on what is on your computer and the product key link I gave you above, plus a link to MS Office product key.

Good luck.

Good luck.
I looked at the Product Key site mentioned above and all it told me was "if windows came preinstalled on the laptop the product key will be found on the underneath or bottom of the laptop". This is the key I keep entering when it asks for Product Key, and it keeps saying the key is wrong.

I'll keep looking and try any other numbers I find, but very little literature came with the computer and haven't seen anything there either.

Thanks for the help.
