At home I have DSL and using a Linksys wireless router. My problem I will loose internet and will have to reboot the modem and the wireless router. If I unhook the router I have no problem. Tonight I hooked the wireless router to the modem and used another cat 5 cable. I seem for the last four hours to have no problem. I am just not sure how the cat 5 cable could cause the problem. Anybody had this ???

I'm on my second wireless Lnksys router...or was until my last power outage. It hasn't worked since. Linksys says it's out of warranty and will only help try to reboot it for $$$. Or they will let me trade UP for more $$$$ (more than my local stores want for a new one). Right now I'm just direct connected to my modem and have let my network flounder for now. I got Linksys years ago because it was the only one I could get to work with AOL. Now I'm not so sure... I'm not happy with Linksys and my more knowedgeable, computer-savy son said I could use any router. Something new this way cometh soon.

cat 5 wiring has 8 pairs of very thin twisted pairs wires each crimped on each end of the connector and if these wires are not cared for it is fairly easy for a wire to break/short or become loose from where it is crimped.

Linksys routers can/have been the problem child of the industry for a number of years. My recommendation would be to go with any of the following:

Belkin N, Netgear N, TrendnetN

Love my Linksys routers!!!
We support over 1000 Datastorm systems all of which have Linksys routers installed. Sometimes they go bad and we replace them with Linksys routers.
On edit: If you are interested, you can simply push the reset button on your router and start from scratch. I wrote a step-by-step article on properly setting up a Linksys router that will work for all but the most advanced users. After the reset, if all works again you can simply use that article and rename and resecure the router and it won't cost you any $$$$.

My personal experiance with these routers has not been very good and I'm sure others have had negative experiances with some of the brands that I've named.
BTW, very informative article that you wrote.

Bill,

I don't mean to be hijacking the OP's thread, but maybe some of this will help him too. Right now I can't reach 192.168.1.1, but I will reconnect the router and try the reset after the kids go to bed. If I can get that far, it looks like your write up will take me the rest of the way. By the way, Linksys MUST be doing something right to maintain such a large market share.

Ken

I have used the same Lynksys for more years than I can remember. I have not had any problems with it.

Isn't there two reset points? The front orange light is one. Just push and hold for 1 second. the other is on the back and requires a sharp object, like ball point pen, or paper clip. It's been a long time since I had to reset. The soft front reset will not affect any of your settings.

The button on the front is for use with a specially equipped computer/wireless adapter that allows for automatic security setup. This button should NEVER be pushed! IMHO

Same here for many years.

I had the same problem you are having but it was not the router but the DSL Modem. I ran a cable from the modem direct to computer with PPPoE connection and found that my modem was going to sleep. So after a few calls to my ISP the sent me a new modem. It did not work as first as the IPS had to call my phone company to do something at the phone company's switch and all is well since.

Linksys makes some good routers and some not so good ones. Same with pretty much all the consumer-grade, home-use electronics. There simply is no hard and fast rule.
I have observed that the good wireless routers will remain in production for several years and have many happy users and the problems ones get dropped from production quickly.
If you find that your problem is most likely the router, I suggest doing some online shopping and reading feedback from those who have purchased and used the various models available.
Here is a good place to start: Newegg.com
