looking for a cheap TV service
I am looking to see if there are any TV services that are either a pay per use or a cheap monthly charge for a few months. I have cable at home and only use my RV maybe 10 weekends a year. Any suggestions?

You could sign up for Dish or Direct TV but you would have to buy the equipment. I don't know of anyone who would rent it to you. What I did was I went on eBay and bought an amplified outdoor antenna. They are cheap, there are omni-directional flying saucer types or directional conventional types ($25-$50). I also got a tripod and a section of electric conduit for another $25, 50 feet of coax runs about $15-$20 and I now have TV in my RV for not a lot of money. Anywhere from 4 to 50 channels depending on where I go.

If you have the data purchase and use a Android box or fire stick ($40- 100 dollar investment) and load KODI, MOBDRO, TERRARIUM and NETFLIX or other streaming services on it and you're good to go.
Use your antenna for the local OTA channels. These streaming services are free and you can watch any tv show , movie, live sports etc that you have the data for.
I use a fire stick and can get anything I want on it. NFL, NBA, HBO, SHOWTIME, NETFLIX new MOVIES just out, any network channel any time and they are all FREE.
Don't spend money on dishes, satellite systems, expensive monthly viewing plans. Contracts, Sports packages. etc. Invest in good Data plans instead.
Go to Youtube and watch some videos and it will open a whole new world for you. Search for KODI, or Firestick or Android box or APK, or Aptoid or Streaming etc..... search any of those terms and it will get you on your way.
You can also use this at home as well and take your Firestick or andriod box back and forth with you and eventually drop your cable company. Or at least drop any pay channels.
Let me know if I can help.

Here is a link to learn some more basic info. It's a little dated but it's good as an overview and should be informative. There are a lot more FREE sources to get programs you want to watch. Check it out.

So how would this get cable news and some cable shows on to a DVR? Most of our TV is cable news viewed 1-4 hours after broadcast via DVR. We do not watch movies, sports, or listen to music. We currently have DIRECTV with two TiVo enabled DVR's, one of which we take in the coach when traveling. We have an OTA bat wing on the coach but no OTA capability at the stick house.
TIA

Well it is best used to watch any and every episode of almost every tv show made as well as movies. It's more on demand than a DVR Also live tv and sports... not so much for old news shows, just new live ones with current content. Most news stories are rehashed over and over for days. But in general most news shows don't have a very long shelf life. If that's all you watch then this may not be a good solution for your specific needs.

The most flexible is streaming content. I use a Roku and it provides access to an enormous amount of on demand programming for free. For current programming, I subscribe to Sling for $25/month with no contract and watch it through the Roku. Sling can be started or stopped at anytime. Of course this solution requires an unlimited data package of some sort.

Let me save you the $25.00 .... Install APK time on your roku and download Terrarium TV and Mobdro you will get 100% free live TV, movies and every season and episode of almost every tv show ever made and that's just 2 of the free services on APK time.

Thanks for the responses. Fits our understanding of these services. TV shows are of little interest to us. We recently upgraded from 8bgb/month to Verizon's "unlimited" MiFi service and thought that might give us access to a more ala carte TV universe. While that's true to a point it still does not mesh well with our viewing preferences and habits.
Thanks again,

In the interest of openess just be aware that technically watching content on "free" streaming services such as Terrarium is illegal. It's unlikely the original content provider will pursue the end viewer and more likely they'll go after the streaming provider if at all. If you are comfortable with that then stream on. The alternative is to use a VPN service to shield your ip address.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. I primarily pay the $25/month to watch dirt bike racing which I haven't found available elsewhere. At the time, it was and still is cheaper than the $20-$30/week to go watch them at the sports bar. Good tip.
Thanks,
Cliff
