I understand there is a version of Garmin that plans routes taking into account the vehicle height and weight, routing you around problem spots.

What is the most popular brand and model among the RV population?

Thanks for any help,

Roll

It's called a Garmin 465T for Truckers.

I have since installed a small PC with the Silverleaf software and I run MS Street & Trips on half the screen so I don't need the GPS any longer.

If you have a laptop and can travel with it on, then try MS Streets and Trips. For me, it has the best travel planning software. I have tried some of the others and always get back to S&T and now with the 2011 version allows you to download the POI's and turn then on and off at will. This is a great feature.
If you cannot travel with a laptop, then this is of no use to you and other will have to chime in for their input.

Can u run S&T live showing yourself on the laptop going down the road if u have a GPS hooked to ur laptop? Or is it just showing u a map on ur screen? I downloaded copilot last week and have had nothing but trouble is not running on our laptop. Keep calling them and they keep having me delete a file from their software to get it to run. Very frustrating. Can u put height restrictions in on S&T and street restrictions in like copilot has?

You can run S&T with a GPS. When you purchase the program, just purchase the GPS with the program. Then next year or so when you upgrade, you purchase the program without the gps. Then it shows you exact location on your screen. You can download the trial version of S&T & use for 60 days, but you would not have the gps. As for the height restrictions, I thought this was an option in S&T, but I cannot find it, so I cannot say for sure. I will keep looking, but maybe someone else can chime in.

Well, I did some research and bought a Garmin Dezi 560 lmt. I have two other Garmins and like them so that narrowed the search. The 560 is new I believe but at any rate the screen is slightly larger than the 465 and it has the features of the 465 including the truck profiles and routing capability. I went for the life time maps and traffic and also took the extended warrenty. On sale and with my add-ons, it came to just under $470.

Thanks all.

Roll

Is there any way that you can download the MS Streets and Trips software to either a Blackberry or to our existing Garmin unit? We have a laptop but do not have a mobile wireless router or service for the short trips that we take right now.

If there is a way to attempt a download, please be patient with me in explaining it...I am a computer dunce...

Thanks in advance.

I prefer the garmin 1490t with the larger screen. You can get poi's for bridge height. I also map out my trip before hand so if I want to stick to major highways and it tries to send me off them, I can adjust.

I also have the Rand McNally motor carrier atlas.. it's 20 bucks at a truck stop or on ebay. I get the paperback , they also have laminated for truckers that like to mark the routes.

I have used the Rand McNally 700T for 2 years now as an over the road trucker so when the wife and I retired last year, we moved the unit to the coach. Must admit that this unit is expensive but has many features for larger rigs. Updates are free unlike most of the garmin units and the POI features are better than most. It has a 7" screen so is better for my tired old eyes. Usually retails at truck stops for $499.00 but I am sure better prices could be found thru the company.
