Just wondering why I need to upgrade the software in my Motosat controler so that it can find the satellite when my stationary dish at home never has to be moved.

You basically answered your own question. Your home antenna does not need to "find" the satellite, it's always pointed toward it. The MotoSAT software allows the antenna to find the satellite. If DirecTV and Dish Network did not change their satellite frequencies and ID's (the routine that MotoSAT depends upon to locate a satellite but Winegard does not) there would be no need for an update, but they do.
