I use a small Garmin NUVI now but for a summer trip across country I want to move up to a 7 inch display.

I see the Magellan 1700 is one option. Not sure I can load my own POI files but as it has SD card I should be able to. Anyone here using 1700.

My current Garmin is OK but to small to read in traffic on road. I see they have the Street Pilot 7200 but shows as discontinued. I do not see the replacement, except models that have a lot of extra features I don't need, like XM, Weather, DVD connection, bluetooth, etc.

I just need a navigator and to be able to use my many unique POI files.

Any suggestions?

Bob

The fact that the 7200 is discontinued is a good thing as it can be bought for about 1/3 the original price.

I bought one at the low price and I love it.

I highly recommend it.

I have a Garmin Street Pilot 7200 and have compared its ability to newer units lately and there isn't anything that I could or would want to replace it with to match it's functionality when it comes to providing Navigational assistance. If you can pick it up at a good price, you can't go wrong.

Check eBay as well for some really great deals on brand-new still-in-box Garmin 7200's as well. I just purchased one since I also wanted the 7" screen and I preferred the Garmins. Also all the accessories/replacement parts (if required) are readily available for the 7200.

Route 66. Thanks for the link. I have bid on 3 7200's on e-bay over the past 2 months. Out bid every time. There are 5 for a buy it now price of over 600.00. The ones that allow bidding usually go in the area of 275.00. I think I am going to get one from the link you posted.

I have considered buying one of those small (9") notebooks at best buy and using Microsoft Streets and Trips. Not sure what way to go.

Anyway, thanks for the link

Don

Isn't there a USB antenna and some software to use a laptop as a GPS?????

Then you have a 10-17" screen...

I used the MS s&t with the gps, and like it, except too large and inconvenient while driving.....the Garmin 680 has worked well for us since '06,,,,more manageable, convenient.....

Tether whatever you have to your laptop and use Streets & Trips or some other laptop based Navi-software. That's what I do,, Not a 4 inch, not a 7 inch but about a 14" screen.

Does the 7200 run on internal battery or do you need 12v?

Also, can you load your own POI Files?

Bob

12v or 120v is required. Both cords included.

Don't know about POI files.

I like the StreetPilot series as I always lay out the route on my laptop and I always make changes to the route, then download the route to the GPS.

Yes, you can load your own POIs into the 7200 - very easy to do. I frequently use the poi-factory to get good updated POI files.

Another vote for the Garmin 7200. I also purchased the Garmin NuMaps Lifetime updates for $119. I've received 3 updates in 9 months so it's worked for me.

Dirk, what software do you use for your route planning and then download to the GPS? I use Microsoft Streets and Trips, and I would love to be able to download the route to my GPS. It always wants to take me on a slightly different course.
