Do any of you have a restore/recovery disk for a Compaq Evo N610c laptop? It was originally loaded with WinXP Pro and I have the product key.

Due to several technical errors, I had to reformat the hard drive. I bought the laptop used and the only software I got was a copy of a drivers disk.

Therefore, I need to beg, buy, borrow, or steal a restore disk compatable with this machine. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Call Compaq, I'm sure they can get one to you.

Second, and once you get it up and running get an external USB hard drive.. Many of these come with "Back up" sofware on a CD in the box, if yours does not get a good back up program.. I use a very old version (single digit version number) of Acronis True Image, there is also Paragon, Norton (Ghost) and a host of other drive imaging programs.

Use often.

Many of the manufacturers partition the hard drive and put their proprietary information in a protected area. As stated, contact Compac and see if they can advise you, or send an update CD.

Good luck.

Also good advice. I bought a desktop from a friend, called Compaq to get the instructions on accessing the hidden partition and sing it to reinstall everything. I didn't want the "skinhead" type stuff his son had loaded onto it!!

Thank you for the tips gang. I searched Compaq's site intending on emailing them but it's surprisingly hard to do. I'll look for a tech support phone number.

Thanks again!

You may of deleted the hidden partion (if there was one) by reformatting the hdd.

One possible way is to get an O.E.M (Original Equipment to Manufacturer) copy of XP off of ebay. You can get them fairly cheap now & you can have this incase problems happen again.

Also as already suggested you can get software to image the xp install with all your programs etc,so easier to install after problems.

No need to worry about drivers too much as you have the drivers cd already. Xp comes with generic drivers for most basic hardware on most desktops & laptops.Any that you havent got are easily downloaded from the various vendors websites.

If you have access to another PC running XP and a floppy disk, you can make a start-up disk as the following link describes.
