New Direct TV Boxes

Earlier this year I upgraded my home Direct system to Hi Def. Had a new dish installed on the house and 4 new boxes on the sets. I never thought of the Motorhome !
Will these new HiDef boxes work on my standard King Dome Satellite dish? The dish is from 2005. Does King Dome make a HiDef roof dish?
In the past I always just took a house box on the road with me .
I'm not a tech wizard on this stuff so any ideas and thoughts will be of help!

If it is a dome of any sort it will not work in HD with DirecTV. The most widely used HD antenna for DirecTV is the Winegard Travler which I highly recommend. Its reception is superb, although it does not work in motion.

MR, yes it is a dome, so now what you are telling me is that all I need is a Winegard Traveler " antenna" to get satellite. Reception, no dish?

Thanks much,
RovinOn

We also have Direct at home, not HD. In the Dutch Star we just traded in I just took a box from home and hooked it up. Could only view one channel on both TV's at a time though. The new to us Magna came with a MotoSat Direct HD dish and two HD Direct tuners. Brought two receivers from home to use. That's when I found out that the Magna is wired for HDMI only and the standard Direct receivers are only coax. Wife wasn't real happy to go without TV for three weeks till we got back home!
Tried to order new receivers today since we're supposed to have free equipment upgrades. The web site would only let me order one free and pay $99 for the second one. Need to get that straightened out tomorrow.

The Travler IS a dish. It is fully automatic, finds and locks onto satellites in a few minutes.

Maybe. What are the exact model numbers of the new boxes at home. They might work with the dome, but it's unlikely based on what DirecTV is mostly installing these days. And you won't get HD, no matter what.

And there's no dome for the RV market that will get DirecTV HD.

Only if you MUST have HD in the RV. The HD receiver may still work with the dome on the 101 bird for SD.

With DirecTV, IF your receiver does not have "18 inch Round" grayed out in the antenna selecion menu (Many do) you can get NON-HD programming with the dome...HD needs the proper dish.

If HiDef isn't that important to you in the coach, I'd just contact Directv and get a standard def box. It'll work fine with a dome, and might not even cost you anything. I'd tell them you want the new box for a kids room. A new Traveler dish is about $1500, and then you have installation, unless you can do it yourself.

As was mentioned previously, you only need a new antenna if HD is a requirement for you in the motorhome. There are NO RV mounted dome antennas which will receive DirecTV HD, so a Winegard Travler , or equivalent, is what you would need.

If you have not upgraded your TVs, then HD would be overkill. If you did upgrade your TVs previously, then HD is your choice.

Taking your current receivers from the house may be possible depending on what receivers you have.

Feel free to contact me directly if you any questions or would like more details.

I'm surprised that no one so far has mentioned that many newer DirecTV receivers can only use the SWM wiring system which your dome assuredly does not have. However, it could, however, be converted to SWM if it has two coax outputs. The cost of the conversion is relatively small.

I believe all receivers and DVRs with model numbers of "25" or higher are SWM-only.

That's why we've been asking the OP for the model numbers, so we can tell him if it's an SWM only receiver or not....

I just moved house.
Previously, I had 2 HD DVRs in the S&B (non-SWM) and an older SD DVR in the RV. The RV has a KVH Tracvision S3 dome and coax wiring to the TVs.
After the move, I upgraded the S&B to the Genie system and stipulated I needed to keep the SD DVR for the RV.
When the tech installed the Genie, he was insistent that we had to upgrade the RV unit because "it's not SWM capable". After a lengthy conversation and several calls to his supervisor, they finally agreed to leave it as-is.
An added complication to my situation is that at my new location, I need a triple-LNB (not HD) dish to receive the local channels.
I think a Trav'ler is in my future
Also, none of the current model DVRs have an RF (coax) output so will probably have to run HDMI as well.
