New to Me King Dome Satellite

Just picked up a used motor home. It has a King Dome Automatic Satellite System. That is all it says on the dome, no model number or anything. It also has a crank up satellite that came from the factory but I won't be using that of course.

It has a small wired control box to tell it to search or turn it off.

In the media cabinet, I have a single coax with a label that says satellite, and two coax cables with one piece of tape wrapped around both that says satellite. There was a DirecTV receiver in there, but it did not have any coax cables connected to it. I put my DirecTV receiver in (one we took out of the fifth wheel I traded in).

I connected separately all three coax cables (one at a time) and told the dish to search. It did not find a signal with any of the cables.

Any suggestions to help get this going?

It really depends on what model you have. Many of the older units will no longer find Dish satellites and quite a few will no longer find DirecTV Satellites. It's pretty much an obsolete system if it is quite old. You can remove the cover to get the model number. it may also show when you start the unit. The coax does not need to be connected for the dome to work if it's going to. Chuck

We had a King Dome system ~2005. If yours is of that vintage it was a piece of junk even when it was new. You can't get DirecTV HD with a dome, anyway. I suggest junking it and getting a new Trav'ler.

I have a King Dome Quest for DirecTV.

It has a small box, called a power injector, that the cable runs thru to power up and run the dome.

The injector plugs into a 120 volt outlet. Without it, there is no search movement.

The model number is 9702.

I was able to find continuity with the coax coming from the satellite.

The satellite does move when I push the search button.

I am using the same DirecTV receiver as I had in my fifth wheel with a different dish.

It still isn't finding a signal. Will this model work with Direct TV?

You need to go online and download the manual. You need to tell the unit what satellites to look for. The settings are important or the unit will not work. There is also a set up for the calibration if it has not been used for a while. And there is still the possibility it will still not work. Both Dish and DirecTV are making changes to the satellites that prevent the KingDome from locking on. Chuck

Looks like it just needed more time to find the satellite. My receiver gives up and says it can't find the satellite. There was a Tivo receiver in the coach. I hooked that up and it let the dish keep looking. It's working!

You can usually tell when the dish locks on because it will say so on the KingDome display and it won't make any noise, but the receiver might still show no signal. Just unplug the receiver for about 10 seconds, plug it back in and let it boot up. All should be well. Chuck

Be sure you have a clear view of the southwest sky. I have a 9702 and it still works, just no HD. Do you have a box with two lights and a switch? if so when it locks on both lights will be green. Try this site
