The CoPilot Truck Laptop Version 8 was released 11/03/2010. CoPilot Live v8 Truck: ALK Technologies

Yes I have used, with out the phone service, on my laptop since 2003. I have tried others but always go back to CoPilot. You can download it, enter an address and press GO or you can pre plan your entire trip. You look at the map, pick the roads you want with you mouse and go. No reason to ever wonder where it is taking you.

With the Truck version you can enter your weight, length, height, and width. CoPilot will keep you on the roads suitable for the rig. Will also detour around tunnels that are closed to propane.

Check out both Version 8 Laptop and Version 8 Truck Laptop. Both version are RV ready. Plus the map up grades are free.

Yes, I am a CoPilot GEEK.

RVhauler, you can upgrade to Laptop 8 for $49.00 and upgrade to Laptop Truck 8 for $69.00. Not bad.

Presently using Streets and Trips 2009, how does this compare? I like the height and RV features on Co Pilot. I can use the Discovery POI mega file on Streets and Trips to get the height feature but would have to upgrade to 2010 anyway so it may be better to just purchase Co Pilot 8. Txs

I have read on some forums that with S&T you are limited on the GPS receivers. Most truck driver that I know of are switching to the CoPilot.

However, with that said, the regular Joe seems to be content with the Street and tips. If they have ever use CoPilot I do not know.

I have never used S&T myself, but for the price and the power of CoPilot I have no second thoughts.

You are right, being able to enter the width, length, weight as well as height means allot to me. When I am pulling my tow vehicle I am close to 55 feet long. My width is 95" and with my mirrors, I am at 117".

Here is what, that I can find, Version 8 Truck Laptop has that Version 8 Laptop does not.

Truck Routing Profile

Copilot Live v8 Truck provides turn-by-turn GPS navigation designed for professional drivers.

Copilot Live v8 Truck provides safe, reliable navigation for large vehicles, taking into account truck restricted and prohibited roads.

You can adjust Copilot Live v8 Truck's routing to suit the vehicle dimensions and load type. Here's how:
  • Select Menu > Truck.
  • Select Routing.
  • Enter your vehicle type. Choose from Truck, Automobile, Motorcycle, Bicycle, Walking or RV (Recreational Vehicle).
  • If you selected Truck above, enter the Max Height, Max Width, Total Length, Total Weight and Total Axle Weight of your truck.
  • Customize your routing, by indicating your preference for a road type and setting a speed for each. For example, choose to strongly favor motorways and set the speed for freeways as 60 MPH.
  • Select any hazmat restrictions that may apply to the load you are transporting. The options are:
    • None
    • Explosives
    • Inhalants
    • Flammable
    • Radioactive
    • Caustic
    • All Hazmats
  • Choose how to handle Toll Roads on your route. The Options are:
    • Always Avoid
    • Avoid if possible
    • Use
  • Choose whether or not to display truck warnings of known potential hazards on route.
    • Select On to display truck warnings, or select Off not to.
    • You can set the distance ahead to receive warning using the arrow buttons.
  • Select from routing options: Scenic Route, National Network, 53 ft Trailer, Override Restrictions or International Borders Open
  • Select the most practical or shortest routing type.
  • You can save your preferences as a routing profile by entering a profile name, or you can skip this step.
To access and use a routing profile that you you've already created and saved.
  • Select Menu > Truck.
  • Select Routing Profile.
  • Select a routing profile from the list using the arrows.
You can also manage your saved routing profiles here. You can select:
  • New to create a new routing profile.
  • Edit to change an existing profile. Here you will be able to update certain routing preferences. The available options are: Custom Routing Type, Tolls, Hazmat and Truck Dimensions.
  • Delete to remove a saved routing profile.
Also includes Truck Stops, Truck Repair Service's, Rest Area's, and CAT Scales. I not sure it will show you campgrounds which you can add yourself.
Turn by Turn is provided in both Version's

Great discription, thanks. Is there a way to add RV Parks/Campgrounds via a POI program to the "Truck" version or would they all have to be added individually? Does the NON truck version have camping areas as a POI?
Thanks
Jim

Yes you can down load a POI file or one at a time. From what I understand camping areas are included. Althought I can not get a straight answer about CG on the Truck Version.

I ask a Long Haul Driver who is using Version 8 on his App. which one he would use, Laptop 8 or Truck Laptop 8, for RV use. Here is his reply.

"I don't have the laptop version of CoPilot 8, but I do have it for the Android. I'm assuming it's the same.

In the RV mode, you can set the height (No restriction, 12'6 or 13'). You can also set it to "Avoid Propane Restricted Tunnels".

I've been using the RV mode for the truck since I got the program and it works great for me in the tractor-trailer. I'm quite sure it would work just as good for you. Width and length shouldn't be an issue for you in an RV - only height."

Speaking of POI's, I just came across this web site. www.poi-factory.com

Don't know much about it but seems it could be useful.

I was just looking at the new Magellan 1700 on line. I have the smaller Roadmaster in my truck and am accustomed to it. the new 1700 offers the CoPilot program as an add on. I am now wondering (this is my first MH) how often I might get into a pickle with height issues. In other words, how important is the height warning feature?

Thanks,

Dave
