No HD - Model SK-3005 Slimline Winegard
Help!
I have been in my 2014 Essex for 5 months and have limited, no HD ever since delivery, persistent "771" error messages on HD channels. The non-HD channels work OK.
All basics have been done ... cables plugged in and replugged, resets, etc etc. Winegard certified tech at Perry FMCA replaced a LNB, all connections, etc, $600 bill and still not working.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

What receiver do you have, and did you call your satellite provider to start your HD service? You need a receiver that is HD capable, and the HD service needs to be turned by your provider.

You shouldn't have paid him. Unless it was working while he was there.
What is your DTV receiver model number?
Signal strength it gets on the 101/99/103?
Does your receiver require a B band converter?
Does it have one?

Go to the satellite setup page and post the signal strengths on 99,101,119 birds.
Any chance you got your dish tangled up with your crank up antenna and distorted the dish. It takes just a fraction of an inch to deal you misery.
Are you in one location or have you tried in several? If in the same location it is possible to have the HD bird blocked. Is your crank up antenna in the way?
What did the technician do for $600. It is hard to imagine it was not working when the bill was presented.
Are you using the same receiver that the tech used?

If you're using an SK-3005 in a non-SWM installation you would need to use B-band converters. I assume the Winegard tech would have checked, but do you have them?
When you say that you are getting "limited or no HD" are the channels always the same? If you didn't have B-Band converters you would get some, but not all the HD channels. Alternatively, if your dish was distorted you might get the channels on the 99 bird and not the ones on the 103 or vice versa.
If your Essex is only 5 months old then it is surprising that a Winegard SK-3005 was installed rather than a Trav'ler SWM model. Are you sure you don't have a SWM system? If the receiver settings don't match the model antenna you have there will be serious issues. Go to Menu/Settings/Satellite settings on the receiver to see how it is setup.
Maybe Bill Adams will see this thread and help out!!

SG, can you supply a couple of further details please? What type of antenna do you have (in motion or stationary (like a travler). Directv or dish?
Thanks Steve

The OP says he has an SK-3005 which is a Winegard Trav'ler for DirecTV

HD-DVR, Model HR24-100 x2; was supposed to have Genie whole home, but dealer did not know how to install, installed these instead.
Activated with DirectTV, discussed with tech support (hours), they said they would have to send a tech out.
Thanks

101 signal strengths are in 50-60's, all others 80+
Paid him in that he felt the dish was out of alignment, Winegard agreed, late on Friday afternoon, he could not get the bracket to replace ... intention was to followup with him, get the bracket replaced. My lack of HD reception is intermittent, it was better when he left Perry; though I am back to where I started now
Thanks

i have a Travler installed last year - had similar issues - found out that the 'tech'installed the wiring backwards to the power inserter. Follow the Winegard SWM installation diagram at http://www.winegard.com/kbase/upload/2452242.pdf The Direct technical people also walked me through this
Also make sure your Direct Receiver is setup with the proper satellite in the menu settings. Mine also was incorrectly programmed, although it didn't affect receiving HD it did have many error messages nearly daily losing signals and causing 771 error.
Something also to evaluate once you get your HD picture is the powered HDMI splitters that send the signal from the Direct Receiver to the TV's in your coach. Most likely you have at last one of these splitters or not more if you have multiple inputs. I have two one for the Receiver and one for the DVD player. I had trouble with the internal power supply of the splitter , ordered new "better" ones from Amazon with 5 stars and had worse results with video dropping and audio nonexistant. I ordered new ones from Tiffin (original version) which they sent out Free of charge and working okay.
I had ordered a Genie from Direct to replace the HD DVR and the original HDMI splitters did NOT carry the Genie signal to the TVs. Frustrating but at least found out the problem. I haven't tried the Genie yet with the new splitters i got yet - trying to catch up on some DVR shows before i screw around and find another nuance i didn't think of with the electronics on these darn things

You are lucky if you are receiving any SD channels with a 50-60 signal.
101 should be in the high 90's to 100% and the 99/103 like you have now in the 80's or better. I never have seen the 101 being lower then the others.
I just checked mine on the "Signal Meters" percent. Mine was a SK-3005 and I converted it myself to a SWM.
101 is 99-100%
99c is 95%
103ca is 96%
103cb 96%
If the bent bracket you are talking about is the arm that holds the LNB.
The Winegard SK-3005 or SWM3 can be adjusted by hand to change the skew and AZ. It takes a little pressure to move it.
With the Genie it puts out a beeping audio on the TV. I can turn the sound up full blast and hear the changes as I make them on the roof.
If your HR-24 doesn't do the sound then it will take one person on the roof and one watching the TV.
Just move the dish around 1/2" at a time to see what direction to move it.
After each move give the receiver a few seconds(15-20) to adjust to the move.
OH!! With the Genie they charge you another $3 a month for the Whole Home. Not a option to not take it.
