Did anyone try this GPS?

It's meant to be made for trucks, thereby avoiding small and/or unsuitable roads for larger vehicles. That also means that if I bought one of these, I would no longer be guided down small gravel roads or twisty mountain passes with my 40' home from home, and that can only be an added advantage.

Unfortunately the Nuvi 465T is a bit pricy - about $500 - so it would be nice to know if the advertised facilities are actually working as expected.

Did no one use or buy this GPS?

I have Googled my way to this review Garmin nuvi 465T Truck GPS Review (GPSmagazine.com)

I would however prefer an opinion from IRV2 members.

I've only heard from one person who has one - says it works fine, at least as far as low clearances, bridge weights, and roads with restrictions on large vehicles. That's what he was concerned about and apparently is satisfied his need. Of course, they are all great until that day comes when they lead you astray. Haven't owned a GPS yet (I've had a half dozen) that didn't do that sooner or later. Usually sooner.

I haven't bought one yet but to intend to. Consumer Reports list the 465T as a recommended buy for devices under the Traffic-ready navigators. The Garmin 885T was first with an overall score of 78, the Garmin 880 was 2nd with 77 points, the TomTom Go 740 Live and the Garmin 465T tied for 3rd place with 75 points.

Seven Garmins in Consumer Reports top 10 Traffic-ready navigators and 3 TomToms.

I don't see "traffic ready" as a big plus, at least not for the added expense of both the GPS and the annual subscription for the traffic service. Traffic is mostly a non-issue in our RV travel style and we live in a rural area when not RVing..

"Traffic ready" is not the feature that will make me want this GPS. It is strictly the feature that will prevent me from being taken down small roads that my 40' rig is not suited for that I require.

We mainly travel at non peak hours and we try to avoid congested areas if at all possible. Life is too short for queing and travelling in our RV is supposed to be joy - not something that will irritate you. Queing irritates me I have to admit. It makes me turn into a grumpy old man no one likes that. Least of all my DW.

It does have a feature that will allow you to adjust for your vehicle size ..ie- You can take it from your rig (that should not go on a "low bridge" road)

to a little sports car that the user may want to take on that twisty windy backroad while zipping under those low bridges!

7" 3' bridge !!

That will make my Dip into an convertible in about 2 seconds. I like convertibles but I am not sure that I want that.

Henrik...that was taken just miles from where we first met! I was obviously in the Buick when I took that photo.
Tell Anne "hello" ...and BTW- Sacs likes this Garmin...it looks like this would be his choice if we do get one...

I bought the 465t I have only used it on one trip.. Routed fine, just like my other garmin would have.

It has some neat features like if you are approaching a tight turn it will beep and give you a warning that it is a tight turn or off ramp.

I has life time traffic updates via the radio thing and it did trigger on that trip saying there was traffic coming and sure enough there was.

I am kinda corny but one of the best feature is it lets you chose an RV as the icon

I like it and I am glad I have it. New England has a LOT of little bridges with reduced weight limit and low clearances underpasses.

I purchased a 465T in June and it has diverted us around low clearences on more than one occasion. It allows me to set the weight and length. I like the ability to set up a route with up to 50 stops. It also shows diesel engine and other big rig repair locations in your area. I have had several GPS devices, this is the best and the Alpine was the worst.

From a post I made on another site:

Just purchased the 465T. Seems to work as advertized.
We wanted it primarily to help with low bridges.
Our experiences so far:

Pro's
Has excellent truckDB
Allows setting up your rigs height, weight and width
Notifies when on "non-truck" or substandard roads
Has turn by turn e.g. text to speech
Screen is larger than standard small Nuvi
Allows route downloads

Cons

Speaker isn't great, maybe not loud enough
Voice is robotic (as in most/all Nuvi's with Turn by turn)
Is expensive $450-$500

For us, the comfort that we'll know when low bridges or narrow roads are on the route, make it worthwhile.

A good review is at:
Garmin nuvi 465T Truck GPS Review (GPSmagazine.com)

While on the subject, while researching GPS's, found a lot of interesting stuff.
-TTS editor, allows you to change what the GPS says in some cases;
So for example, you can change "recalculating" to say...."I'm lost...trying again" or whatever you'd like it to say.

-GPS gate allows SOME Garmin GPS based devices to be used with PC based products; for example, my Garmin, runners watch, Forerunner 205, can be connected with MS Streets and Roads for real time GPS tracking. Pretty cool.

Paul
