Here is my situation.
I have cable in my house at this time, but have an older Dish antenna on the side of my house. I think about 10-12 years old???
My son has Dish service and I can get a reciever from him.
So my question is, will the older dish antenna work if I put it on a stand? Or will I need to buy a new dish antenna?

You don't say what service but the dish and receiver must match. Else, you should be ok. Try it. NVNG

Chances are that your son's Dish receiver requires a "Dish Pro" sat dish.

If so, that old dish on the side of the house may not work, but try hooking it up first.

They still work you just will have standard definition. I have a 12 yr old dish mounted to my house and am buying a new dishnetwork reciever after xmas. The dish recieves the signal from all satellites and the reciever decodes them.

That is not correct, DirecTv receivers work fine with a Dish dish and LNB.
I have a two newer, (2 year old), DirecTv receivers connected to a 18 year old Dish Network dish antenna, with a Dish Network dual LNB.
I was given the antenna by a coworker and bought my first Directv receivers in 2001 (upgraded them in 2009).
(I take one of two to use with the King Dome on the coach when camping.)
