It depends on whether you want HD television or not. What is installed on your coach? HD requires a multi-LNB dish and SWM.

We have G2 for campgrounds with trees. Works well, sometimes needs a few minutes more than expected to find the satellite but we enjoy it.

Just posted to another thread about our setup. I bought a tripod and coax off of ebay and a dish with LNB from the local Directv shop. It's all manual but i've gotten used to aiming it without any difficulties.
The dish is a standard round 18" so it only aims at one satellite at a time. I always aim it at the 101° satellite that gives the most channels we watch. I almost bought a Slimline dish to get locals as well but so far, have not missed them. I can just crank up the antenna to receive locals at most places we stay. The tripod and the small sized dish are easy to store when not needed.

it is a tad bit more complicated that this. The 18" dish only has a Ku LNB on it so it can only receive signals from Ku satellites. And your receiver thinks any single LNB is pointed at 101. So, you can only get sat 101 with that dish. You cannot access the 99 or 103 birds (which are Ka band signals) that carry all the HD content with that dish.

I've had the Winegard Carryout G2 with DirecTV (HR24-500 receiver) for two years. It works great.

I have never tried aiming at another satellite but always thought i could if i ever needed to. Thanks for the info, i won't waste my time trying.
We're still using the old CRT TV that came with the motorhome so receiving HD isn't a concern. I'll definitely look into getting a different dish setup if i ever replace the old TV.

I have a tripod mounted Direct TV dish. It can be connected to 4 receivers. I DO NOT have SWM. I receive HD with it when setting the elevation and tilt as per the zip code instructions. Then after leveling the tripod, rotate the dish to the correct azimuth. The signal meter will pick the 110 satellite.

Look at TVFORRV.COM. No we are not affiliated but they have great products for RVers. When we used a portable dish, we used one of their products and it made set up very easy. We are full timers and just stopped carrying it with us because we have not used it in the last 4 years. We have rarely not been able to get our satellite locked in with Alaska being the exception. By the time we reached Alaska, we could no longer get a satellite signal.

Did you need any addition equipment i.e. b-band converter with you HR24-500? I just purchased the Winegard Carryout G2+ and none of my directv receivers will work with the G2+

Nothing but plugging the coax input into the receiver and an HDMI cable between the receiver and TV. Winegard has a table that shows which receivers work with the G2. I think the G2+ uses power through the coax, probably need a receiver that supplies the proper power to the coax cable.

Portable Dish
I bought a cheap 18 inch dish on ebay with one lnb, made a stand with pvc pipe that sits flat on the ground it has a square base the dish sits about 20 inches off the ground. I never actually level it i just aim it at the southwest and listen to the beeps on the tv set. I only use it if there are a lot of trees and the roof mount is blocked. I don't have hd, if I want local info I use the crank up antenna. This works for me from Canada to Florida and west to Iowa.
