Just wondering if anyone has tried the prepaid mobile broadband from Verizon. We don't travel full time and rather than paying for a monthly fee, I was wondering how the prepaid mibile broad band was working out, if you only use the internet occassionally.

Let me know if you are using, and how you like it.

I have not heard of PrePaid Mobile Broadband but I am going to look into it as this coming May we are leaving for Alaska. Up until then I have always had a AT&T DSL connection as I've been parked in one place due to my job. Ohter alternatives all seem to be really expensive, satellite services have been too slow for me unless I want to go broke every month paying for their top of the line service. I am a Sprint mobile customer and I know they offer an Internet service card you can purchase with monthly service depending on the amount of up and down data you are using. I really don't want to do that either because when we are on the road, if there is free service where we are staying, then the Sprint service would be wasted.

PrePaid Mobile Broadband sound likes the way to go. Use it when needed, not when you don't. Nothing lost each month when you don't use it.

Another alternative for mobile internet is a company called Millenicon. They don't have contracts, there is a $59.95 monthly charge when you use it. You can cancel service for a period of time then for $20.00 get reconnected. As I understand it they buy block time from Verizon and resell to their clients similar to Tracfone. I know I am in area right now that only Verizon works and my internet has been showing full bars. May not work for you but it is an alternative to check out. It has worked well for me.

Another choice for occasional internet use if you have a Verizon cell phone is to access by tethering your phone to your computer instead of using an air card. The advantage of tethering over an air card is you can turn the service off and on as necessary. As I understand it, there is no charge to activate or deactivate your internet access. Verizon prorates the monthly access charge only for the days you had it turned on rather than for a whole month. The disadvantage is tethering doesn't work with all phones.

We have satellite internet, but we are investigating tethering for use when we are parked under trees and our roof-top dish can't see the satellite. Our current phone doesn't work with tethering, so we need replace it. We can either buy a new phone outright (no change to the length of our contract) or wait a few months until we are eligible for a new phone (contract gets extended 2 years from date of phone upgrade).
