I always reboot mh HR44 Genie after the Trav'ler is properly aimed. If I don't do that I've found that it occasionally gets "confused". The HR44 boots so quickly that it's not a big deal. I'd rather do that when setting up rather than sitting down to watch TV later only to find that I needed to do it.

Turn off or unplug? Unplugging ours causes it to reset.

Ours puts up a message that says something about not receiving a signal for more than 4 hours. I just press OK and the message goes away.

1. Todays hard drives are made to go in laptops where they are carried around from place to place. Moved from your lap, etc. They are a lot more rugged than earlier hard drives
2. I leave my Hopper with DVR plugged in when I travel I have never had a problem with it. On the other Hand the Hopper in my house lost the Hard drive and it has never been moved from the day it was set up and turned on.
3. Other posters were right there is no connection from reciever to traveller it uses onboard hardware to find the signal.
4. When you get where you are going push the power button it will say connecting to the reciever and will unfold then find the sattelites, When you are ready to leave push power it will say something like shutting down. It will stow the antenna then turn power off at the controller. Nothing complicated about it.

I may try it both ways. The first leg of our upcoming trip will still be within the range of my locals, so I will leave power on the receiver. I thought about using some type of cushioning below the receiver, but it will be sitting on my Bluray player and I don't want it to get hot.

When you are done watching TV, turn the DVR off. Stow the Trav'ler. When you get to your new location, Start the Trav'ler. When you get a signal lock, turn on your DVR. The DVR will need the occasional reset, just like in a stationary install. Easy Peasy. We've put something like 15k miles on our Genie with no troubles.

Be careful about too much heat with your disk players. Our VIP 211k was so hot it cooked the Samsung DVD player below it. Had to replace DVD player.

On this trip I plan on having a temperature sensor in that cabinet to monitor the heat. If necessary I will put a fan in there. There are numerous slots in my cabinetry for venting. This is also another reason I bought some rubber spacers. The Directv DVR will be sitting on top of everything else.

I put a small fan in where I have my DVR; my old DirecTV HR22 used to get quite hot. The new Genie HR44 runs a lot cooler and the power supply is separate from the device. BTW, the fan I bought is USB-power so I have it plugged into the Genie's USB port.

I had everything installed and running in my cabinet for about 3 hours today. The temp in the motorhome was 85 and the temp in the cabinet was 91.

But, what you really want to look at is your receiver temperature. You can find it by pressing MENU>Settings & Help>Settings>Info & Test>More System Info. At the bottom of the screen you will see a value for Internal Temp. A temp above around 135 can become problematic (although I have seen 145 without a problem). My ambient temperature right now is 75 and my receiver internal temp is 111 F.
Something to consider.

With regard to the hard disks, I lost one and replaced it with a 1TB military hardened unit. It handles road shock input with no problems. From Amazon for about $65.
