I didn't think this was a technology question, rather a simple common sense question. But after visiting several Verizon stores I am finding out different.
Here is my question: How do you reduce the number of rings before your cell phone goes to voice mail?

Pretty simple? Not so. Seems every store has a technical theory or reason why you can't but the short answer is no. It remains at a 30 second period of time from the start of the incoming calls first contact regardless of the number of rings. Some are ringtones are shorter or longer than others. (?) So they say. Mine happens to be four.

Not that it is important but my reason for making this request is that we have all of our home and business incoming calls forwarded to our cell phone from our land line when we are away. We also have a freeze monitor and security system that requires three rings before it forwards calls to our cell phone. Add the four rings that the cell phone has and now you have seven rings before our cell phone voice mail picks up. We are not always able to get to the cell phone before many calls are dropped or hung up from people thinking we have something wrong with the phone. We are constantly looking at the missed call log, calling people back and getting the same response, "Oh, I thought something was wrong with your phone because no one answered"......!

Anybody have a trick or shortcut to fool the system? The last clerk whom I dealt with assured me with her 16 years of service with Verizon she knew how and who to call to make the change. She promptly walked away with her tail between her legs and said, "Sorry, no can do...........

Any suggestions?

It's not a function of the phone, it's the switch and they're probably right about it not being able to be changed (I have never seen any business switch that allows individual rings either). You might get them to turn it off but that's probably about it.

Jeff is correct, it's a function of the wireless switching machine.

I've not heard of any CFDA (Call Forward Don't Answer) ring count variables for cell phones.......only land lines, which had a minimum of 2 rings.

I believe the only solution is not very practical and that is to turn the phone off and the incoming calls should go to voice mail much quicker.

Especially since the caller would hear "The Verizon subscriber you are calling cannot be located" before the call was forwarded to voice mail. I don't have a lot of confidence in businesses where it appears the only means of contact is a cell phone. It would give me the idea they might be a fly by night operation.
