Good morning all. I'm about ready to install a portable dish. My first thought was to install the reciever in the overhead console area with the other a/v stuff in the coach (some rewiring and a few hours of installing). The reciever I'm using is a nice vintage Sony A55 with RF remote. That being said, I'm thinking I might try to intall it in the outside compartment where the cable tv input is located (it's weather tight). I have 120v in there and with the RF remote I think I may be able to control the reciever from inside the coach. Anyone tried it? Anyone have any success.

I also have a vintage Sony with RF that I have inside an overhead compartment and it works fine. Before installing in the ouside compartment can you place it there and run longer cables to hook it up and see if it is going to work?

When I installed mine in the overhead I tried working it form various locations in the coach and if I am in the back in the corner with a couple of bathroom walls and the kitchen between, it won't work.

Good luck. Ron

Thanks for the reply. Everything worked out fine. The reciever is in the left rear outer compartment with the RF antenna. I can control the reciever from inside the coach with no problem. This weekend I will secure the reciever and tidy up the install. The big suprise was that I cannot recieve my locals from AZ here in San Juan Bautista CA. The reciever displays "program not available in your area" message. I called Direct TV and they told me that they "spot beam" locals and unless I want to change my billing address I would not get local programming. This is news to me. Just for the fun of it, I'm going to take the reciever back to Prescott when we drive there in a few weeks and see if I get my locals back. Can anyone shed a little light on this subject and perhaps offer suggestions?

Just a follow up on the local programming issue. Direct tv has a form that can be filled out for RV's and Truckers. The form "Mobile Vehicle Declaration of Intent" can be filled out and mailed with a copy of your registration, to allow you to have long distance network programming. We are grandfathered on our NBC and ABC east and westcoast feeds but had to fill out this form to recieve the CBS feed. If anyone would like this form, I have it in PDF format and would be happy to send it to you via email. Contact me at rirrgang@commspeed.net

Good info in this post.

on a side note i bought an adapter to connect from the audio outputs on the back of the unit to feed an Auxilary input on our stereo system. I now just tune in the satelite to XM radio channels and listen to digital music through the RV and on the outside speakers.

Perhaps you could do this too Rick and complete the install to include a stereo feed?

That's a most excellent idea. We listen to the XM part of Direct tv all the time. At home we did just that but have not yet done so in the coach. Another project in the making.

i called direct tv and was informed of the same form. but i was also told that i would have to change my package in order to get the east - west coast channels. i was told that the motor home recv would have to be a 2nd account.

Not sure what package you have to have. I have locals, hbo and starz plus all the other dtv programming. They call it premium or premier? I think you mis understood about the second account. What they did was make my mh reciever the 2nd reciever on my account, my TiVo at home is 1st. I'd call back and get clarification. I sent in a copy of the reg and filled out the form. It was pretty easy and they were pretty nice about setting the whole thing up.

i called them and got 2 different stories. i have 4 recvs and put 1 in the m/h. I have the premium package. Again, they told me i would only recv the locals based on my billing zip code. Once i was out of area, i would lose them. If i wanted east/west coast, i would have to get the second account. Not sure of what is up.

They are correct about losing locals and or getting locals only in the zip code of the bill. Direct tv spot beams locals so no loss there. Can't answer your question about the 2nd account. They did not put me through that.
