Good Day,
We have talking about replacing our Manual Satellite Dish Antenna with a dome. Our question is which type is better, Sationary or In-Motion? Also which is the best brand? We use DirecTV as our service, if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

I had a KVH LM system; this was about 10 years old and not working reliably any more. This was an automatic tracking system (you could drive down the road and it would keep tracking). I replaced it with a KVH R4 this system is a stationary system. We did not have any need to watch TV while driving down the road. And of course your cant have a TV on were the driver can see it anyway. I am using DirecTV with the KVH R4 and the system is working great. I caught it on sale for $200.00 off from the manufacturer (and that didn't hurt).

With our floorplan, the TV is located behind the passenger seat and operates while the coach is in motion, so passengers could watch it and the bedroom TV while I drive.

If you have no need/desire to watch TV while the rig is in motion, you would be better off with an open-face antenna. MotoSat makes one of the best, and has models with multiple LNBs if your DirectTV service requires that.

If you DO want to be able to watch TV while the coach is in motion, the dome it is! I haven't had a dome, but from what I have read I would probably go with a KVH or maybe KingDome. I would avoid Winegard.

We have a King Dome and do not use it much because of dew on it in the AM causes the signal to be lost.A portable dish on the ground circumvents the shading effect of trees in the campgrounds and results in a higher signal to the receiver on a clear day.If you go with King Dome ,their Techies give really great support in the event of questions in the installation.

I am going to echo Paul's post. The only way I would recommend a dome is if you need in motion use. Otherwise, a regular dish will give you better performance.

I think since you said you wanted to get away from the crank up, you are looking for the easiest product to use. In my opinion that would be the MotoSAT dish. You can get one for pretty much any combination of satellites that you need.

Ron and Susan,
Think about your current and future needs. If you have any desire to receive the HDTV programming from DirecTV then you cannot use a dome. The new DTV satellites use a KA band signal and all the current domes systems are only capable of receiving the signal from KU band satellites.
If you MUST be able to watch TV while you are driving then your only choice is a dome. See what I mean about thinking about your needs?
The best stationary antennas on the market are the open face dishes as they do not succumb to the problems of rain fade like a dome does. Every dish can lose its signal in a heavy downpour/thunderstorm but the open face dish will be the very last to go.

Great suggestions. You really do need to know what type you need.I like having the in motion for my kids. There is no dome dish that can get all the dtv hdtv channels. With a dome your limited to around 18 channels.Winegard make the traveler 3 or 5 lnb slimline dish,or dish 1000 for dish subscribers. I like this system. Its an easy install and is self searching stationary dish. If I were to go hdtv, this would be the one I go with. The technology is getting more advanced as we type.If you do go with an inmotion dish winegard has lowered thier pricing on the 12" lowprofile.Do a search.

I've heard this a couple of times, however I've got a King Dome and never had this problem with dew causing it not to work. I've been in south Texas and the dew is usually very heavy in the mornings. Granted it's winter and maybe it just hasn't been "dewey" enough.

In any case take into account the latest requirements for satellite tv. DirecTV for example, needs more then one LNB for receiving multiple satellites now. I can't get certain channels because my dish only has one LNB, so when I upgrade I'll be getting one of the newer multiple LNB dishes. Also, consider HDTV.

Hello Outbumn,

I too am looking to update my antenna system. I now have a KVH 1, domed, stationary unit. It works very well. I had a King Dome on my old Holiday Rambler and it worked well also. I never had a "dew" fade problem with either. I could always get a good picture, signal strength above 60 (Direct TV), and it usually comes in about 85-89. My friend has an open dish, again Direct TV, and he gets about a 95 signal strength. He has to climb up on the roof and tie the open dish with bungies to prevent movement and intermedient signals in high wind conditions. I don't have that problem.

I am looking at the KVH 6 system, as well as others. I have recently updated my TV's to LCD HD and would like the HiDef programming available to us "on the road" travelers. I am attaching KVH's
