Satellite phones
Hi, all! We are hoping to go to Alaska next summer and want to be sure we can call for assistance should we need it. We have Verizon, but know coverage can be spotty thru Canada and Alaska. Do any of you have any info, tips, etc., on satellite phones? Thanks for the help!

You really don't need anything beyond a cell phone. In fact, we turn ours off when going through Canada as the rates are so high. In AK, unless you are going to really remote places, there are numerous people on the roads who are willing to help. Be it a hand to help fix your problem, or a ride to the next place where someone can help, the people up there are outstanding. We've been up 6 times since 2006 and have had a flat, but we were in Glennallen when that happened and we were able to call Coach Net. It still took 2 days to get back on the road. We did have 3 flats on a tour van going to Kendicot, and only had 2 spares. This is a remote road built on a railroad roadbed, and the spikes left over can do a job on tires. The tour guide hitched to town to get another tire while we waited with the van. Every second vehicle stopped and asked what they could do to help. One guy was going to put his spare on our van until we got to town. The Alaska highway is very well traveled and I've never seen a breakdown along the road without help there or on the way. Regardless, just don't be in a hurry. It's a long distance from anywhere to anyplace and parts may need to be shipped in. Think days instead of hours and enjoy the moment. You're on vacation.

I carry a Kenwood TS-2000, an assortment of antennas, and the license needed to use it... There is ALWAYS someone I can talk to.
Why more motor home travelers do not get a Ham Ticket I do not know, it is easy to do,, To start: Home
Find a club near you, take the class (often free save for the book) write teh test (About fifteen bucks last I checked, note ABOUT) and the license arrives in your snail mail.
Got mine in 1968, Novice in Spring, Technician in fall) upgraded in 2006 (General in spring, Extra in fall) very easy, For the upgrade I did not even complete the class.. Tested out early.
