The paragraph above is the reason I bought a UPS, for when the generator shut off and the power briefly went out 1/2 the time, causing my DVR to reboot. When UPS says it won't work very well, what they mean is that it won't work at all. It beeps 4 times every 30 seconds or so when the inverter is working, indicating power failure. I tried all sensitivity settings to no avail. I asked their tech support if they had one that would work, and they told me no.
I later replaced the modified sine wave inverter with a Magnum pure sine wave inverter, and now the UPS works perfectly for that brief period. I believe the Magnum switches over much faster, so I am not sure it is even necessary, but it is there now so I use it.
DVR's use more power than a standard receiver, so I don't try to use the UPS for long periods. I will leave the inverter on if I have something I want to record, otherwise I will turn it off. I have 6 AGM batteries good for about 600 Amp-hrs. Its what they are there for.
