I have to replace my satellite dish. A previous thread mentioned how great the Wineguard SK-1000 is. The Wineguard IN-Motion is almost the same price. Why not go with the IN-Motion?

The Winegard SK-1000 will receive DirecTV HD, an open face dish will work better in a low signal condition and it's not susceptable to the dew problem that domes suffer from.

Actually I have DISH. The specs that I have been looking at note that the SK 1000 is for Dish. But, I did not know about the low signal issues with a dome and the issue with dew on the dome. Good points. I guess that the only true measure would be to compare them side by side.

In addition to the comments above, unless you have children or someone who needs to be entertained while on the road, why would you need in-motion satellite? I prefer no dome for what I perceive to be better reception over a braoder spectrum of weather conditions. I have a Winegard SK-3005 HD antenna system.

I have the Winegard 3005 too and can't say enough good things about... but I have DirecTv HD so I really need it. If you don't really (really) need in motion capability I would go with an open faced dish.

Good Luck...

I believe in-motion dishes have a single LNB so they may have to switch from one sat to another when you change channels.

This puts the kibash on the ability to watch different programs from one dish -- even though you can connect multiple receivers to the dish.

The Travler is has multiple LNBs so switching from one SAT to another isn't an issue. Combine that with the ability to add a 2-TV receiver (like a Dish 622 or 722) and you can view separate programming on two TVs.

ALL domes, in-motion or not, have only a single LNB.

Oh, you can watch different programs on different TVs with a dome...AS LONG AS THOSE TWO PROGRAMS ARE ON THE SAME SATELLITE. Which makes it a problem for Dish Network users because if one person wants to watch one program that appears on, say, the 119 satellite, and another person wants to watch a program on a different TV that is on the 110 satellite, then one of those people won't be able to watch their program. A dome also presents a problem for Dish Network users who want to use a DVR...if the program you want to record is on a different satellite than the program you want to watch, you won't be able to do that.

A dome for DirecTV users isn't a problem because, since a dome can't receive DirecTV HD programming, you only have to worry about one satellite...the 101.

Unless you plan on watching TV while going down the road why bother with the in motion. We originally were going to purchase a dome but while looking at them at Camping World just in the short time we were there I had three different people come up to me and recommend the Traveler over the dome due to poor reception.

We never used the 'in motion' capability of our domed dish. For our new rig we specified a Winegard 3005. At the dealership campground the only over the air channels you can get are the public TV stations (Ever notice that no matter what you can, or can not get, the public stations always come in? Your tax dollars at work.) We were the only ones parked in the back row, up against the trees, that could get a sat signal. The others had the domes.

The price is the biggest stumbling block I have with the slim line dishes. $1400 plus $300 install at CW compared to $800 and $167 install for the dome.

That being said, we do not currently have a dish, but plan to have one installed in the next couple of months. I would imagine our dish usage would only be used while tailgating, etc. Most campgrounds have cable theses days.

I guess it comes down to how much time you spend watching tv in the RV. For us, we are only weekend warriors so maybe the dome would suit our needs?? Not sure!

I hear you on the cost issue and that price for the Winegard is considerably less than it was when they were introduced. If your use is really mostly for tailgate parties and occasional weekend use you're probably right that it would be overkill.

Best of luck...

Rick

We just have the crank up satellite dish on the roof of our coach. I like the 5 minute challenge of finding the signal and it gets great reception. Parts plus install was $500.

Can't really part with the extra $1,000 for the in-motion system. Besides....my wife would rather watch a DVD.

Good luck in picking out the right system for you.
