Satellite TV

Normally, in satellite TV setups with multiple TVs, can the individual sets watch different channels?

Above answers are correct for today. In a few years the scene may be totally different. With the advent of Cellular 5G, a lot more people may be dropping satellite and streaming TV instead.

Not much will change until they deliver fast reliable internet to rural areas. I'm in San Diego County and can't get fast internet.

Depending on which sat TV.
Dish calls it a Hopper and Joey for the slaves. Directv calls it a Genie and mini Genie for the slaves.
Both do esentislly the same thing. The main box receives the signal translates it to the main TV and broadcasts everything to the minis wirelessly. The main box also had a hard drive to record programming for watching later.
There are some programming differences, so look at what stations are offered by both and pick the one that meets your desires the best.
Dish is more customer friendly, but it also does not offer many christian programming. Direct has better sports packages. Well, you get the idea, again check out the channel lineup and pick.

Doubtful 5g will ever be deployed in rural areas in any significant numbers. The technology is inherently short range and really geared to densely populated urban areas.

I'll add some to what has already been said. Yes, most dome type antennas have two output connections but at least with Dish network, you must watch channels on the same satellite. It is a single LNB so it can only "see" one satellite at a time. With a Trav'ler or RF Mogul Triple LNB antenna you are not limited since they will lock onto all three satellites at one time. Also, the above recommendation on the Hopper system requires a triple LNB antenna and will not work with a dome antenna. You are also not limited to a Hopper system as you can have two Wallies that will receive separate channels. With two Wallies and hard drives, you can watch two separate channels and record two more at the same time on a triple LNB antenna.

Yes with a couple of caveats. First each tv will need a receiver. Second if the antenna is a dome type then the secondary receiver can only watch channels that are on the same satellite that the primary receiver is receiving. I believe the Winegard Travl’r and the RF Mogul are the only antennas that can receive multiple satellites simultaneously allowing multiple receivers to access different satellites.

If you have one of the portable automatic antennas, the 2nd receiver can only watch another channel if it is on the same satellite as the #1 receiver. These small antennas can only access one satellite at a time.

Oh heck no one has even started discussing antennas yet. Domes might look nice, but are nearly worthless if the OP wants watch/record more than one program at a time. Open face dish is the best option. Winegard is the cheapest and worst of the automatic open face dishes. RFMogul is a bit more expensive but can be repaired on site. Neither automatic roof top dish is worth a hoot if the OP camps in the trees. In that case a ground based dish tripod assembly can be the best solution. On top of that their a lot cheaper.

My Traveler has always worked great. Since 2010. Except in dense tree cover.
