Our '02 Journey came with a Winegard RM-46DE dish. Its still listed on the Winegard web site. As Grandpa used to ask, "Will this dog still hunt?" Has the technology gone beyond this unit? DW wants to know.

I'm not familiar with that exact model, but for Dish Network, or Direct TV, the LNBs (the units at the end of the arm away from the actual dishh) for standard channel reception should still be ok. - For the HD channel reception, you will need the newer oval dishes with the multiple LNBs.

If there is only one cable from the dish to the receiver, it should work just fine with a standard receiver, if it has 2 cables from the dish you should be able to use a DVR receiver to watch a show and record another at the same time.

It won't provide DirectTV HD but will give you a SD picture.

I guess you could tune to different Dish Network satellites and pick up HD channels. That would be a pain though. I think Dish has three satellites with HD channels so you would have to keep setting it for different satellites as you changed channels.

I replaced mine with a Winegard SK3005 Traveler automatic dish last winter so I could get HD channels.

To tell the truth, at this point any "D" is good. High, medium or Standard, DW wants TV. Comcast has proven smug and expensive, so I've been looking at Direct TV, which the Winegard manual says the old dish will pick up. There is the matter of some large old oaks on my eastern flank at home. Thanks for your responses. Now I have to learn about sat tv. After I hook up the brake controller for our box trailer, and the wiring for lights on the Miata toad, and so forth and so on.

It will work for DirecTV SD. None of the tech has changed there (yet).

It will also work for Dish SD and HD, but Dish uses three satellites for full service. You would have to re-aim at times. DirecTV uses one satellite for SD, so it would be set and forget with DirecTV.

You mentioned Comcast and trees at home, are you setting up a dish at home or on an RV or both?
Yes, trees are the biggest problem with any sat. dish on an RV, luckily most RV parks have cable tv so at least we can watch something when the trees block the signal.
We like the programming on Directv better than Dish, I think I get more for my money so we have Directv at home and the MH.

Both Home and RV - There are good and bad about cable and satellite service, but thought we'd try Direct TV since it work with the dish already on the coach. Probably need to rig up a portable dish for when the dreaded signal blockage pops up. For now, replacing the CRTs is the project on my plate. One of the projects. Took my first dive under the dash the other day, putting in a brake controller for the trailer. Lord, is there a bunch of stuff under there. Found the amplifier for the surround-sound under the foot rest. That was a surprise.

Let me add another kink to the discussion. I am using a Dish network receiver that is H-D for the parlor flat screen. It's perfect. It has a module for a second tuner which is feeding the bedroom set. The living room remote is IR and the bedroom is RF, which doesn't have to see the receiver. That way we can watch two different stations simultaneously. Also, despite an orignal dish on the roof, I am using a new 4-LNB oval dish on a tripod. Seems everywhere I've parked, if it had been on the roof, I would have been sunk. This way I can place it where I need, and always have great service.

It keeps getting more complicated. I'd just read a book, but that Kindle reader is starting to look pretty good. Technology is here, there and everywhere.

A lot has changed since 2002 in the satelite technology, especiallly with Direct TV. Your first step is to contact Winegard.

First of all we use Directv HD. Both at home base and in our RIG.

The round dish on your RV roof will work only with directv standard.
If you plan on replacing your CRT with a HD as we did last spring. Then you will need to go with a newer satelite dish.
We replaced our CRTs with two HD Samsungs.

During the summer months we use HD dish which is installed on a shed. Our dish is a HD swm set up. Which hooks to the Rig with only one coax cable connected in the bay to the cable TV input. We run 2 TV's at same time on different channels with this swm set up.

We found while traveling we just use the over the air antenna and it pulls in great clear pictures. Local broadcasts of CBS, NBC, ABC and PBS.

Hope this helps.

In the US there are 4 Sat TV service levels.

DirecTV (not DirecHDTV) nothing has changed here, if it was set up for use with DirecTV it still works with DirecTV

DirecHDTV, needs a special 2 band, 3 satellite, antenna, Will still work but not for HD.

DishNetwork: If it was set up for Dish Network it should still work however see notes.

Dishnetwork HDTV, it might, but may need an upgrade

Notes:
DirecTV uses (normally) one satallite (101w)

DishNetwork 2, and Dishnetwork HDTV 3. all 3 in the same band

IF your dish is a MANUAL, it will work with DirecTV, Dish or Dish HD.

IF it is an automatic, it may need a software upgrade for Dish or Dish HD or a controller upgrade or it may just not be possible.

The dish would need a HARDWARE upgrade for DirecHDTV.

Again on Dish:
If the antenna (Dish) has but a single LNB lense (Dish 300/DirecTV) it will work with ONE Dish receiver.

If it has two coax connectors on that LNB it will work with 2 or more DIRECTV receivers. (one connector then just one receiver)

That about covers what I can offer.

Can you watch a different program on each tv AND record a different progam on each tv, all at the same time?
