Sk-3005 to genie
We have a Model SK-3005 DirectTV Slimline TRAV’LER Automatic Multi-Satellite TV Antenna Reflector (SLSK4NRO-01) on our motor home. We have a Genie HD-DVR HR44 installed in our stick & brick home and the Direct TV Reflector is SL5S4NRS-01. Get a SWM not detected error message when I try to install on the motor home. I understand they make a Kit for converting to make the Genie work with the SK-3005. Has anyone tried to install the Genie on their motor home? What equipment do I really need?
Thanks for any advice. Gary

Hello Gary & Janis!
The SK-3005 does not have SWM technology installed on it. The Genie is a SWM-only receiver, meaning you need to have SWM technology on your antenna. There is a kit you need called the SWM8 kit to make the Genie be able to communicate with your SK-3005 Trav'Ler. Our part number for this is SWM-840. It comes with the SWM8 multiswitch, power inserter, and a 4 way splitter if you are going to multiple receivers.

Thanks for the input. I have four wires from Ports A, B, C and D going into the motor home. Can the multiswitch be installed inside the coach instead of on top? Does the SWM8 multiswitch get hot?

Yes, you can install the SWM-8 inside, but it does generate a fair amount of heat so you don't want to put it in a small cabinet if you can avoid it.
On my coach, all the sat cables went to the basement before they split up to go to the various TV locations, so I installed the SWM-8 down there. Works fine.

Thanks for all the help. The SWM8 Kit 840 varies in price on the internet from $240.00 to $60.00 on ebay. What a big difference. Where did you purchase yours?

I didn't. I bought the SWM-8 and power inserter individually. From solidsignal.com, I think.

SWM-8 is around $36 on Amazon. The PI-29 power inserted is around $10. Works great with the SK-3005 and the Genie. I have both in my coach. My SWM is on the roof.
Be aware Directv won't let you have more than one Genie per account.

I believe the Winegard website has a guide as to how to add SWM to their campatible dishes. And which ones are compatible.

Here's the link: http://www.winegard.com/kbase/upload/2452242.pdf
There's no reason to pay Winegard for the SWM8 and the PI29; they are available for a lot less on Amazon. We converted our SK3005 to SWM last year.

Thanks for finding the link to the document I referenced. It tells you all you need to know. I actually used a SWM-16 on mine, as it was a little cheaper than the SWM-8 at the time.
