Streaming Netflix at a CG...Really?

Solution:
Shhhh! Just bring your own hotspot and never complain, worry, or rant again.
Nuff said?

No and if you believe that, then why even comment. LOL

While I am not one of those that relies on good WIFI all the time, there are some that do. Besides, I don't know that my hotspot will always be in the coverage of my Verizon provider when I travel to new and exciting places. When that happens and a CG advertises WIFI, I have a reasonable expectation that it is good enough to get my email, read the news, watch a few news clips and see some You Tube videos on my face book.

Like it or not, CGs should be honest about WIFI capabilities. If it is limited through out the park then say so. Again, they have the ability to control bandwidth "hogs" if they chose to. Yes, there are some places they can't get much bandwidth so they either concede that issue and don't advertise it or restrict it to the main office and don't farm limited bandwidth out to the entire park.

I'll use another analogy. FHUs should mean that you get good voltage all the time. If your voltage dropped to less than 105 because folks dared use their air conditioners on a 90* day would you be as understanding? Yes...I've been there and seen that! Wait...we have generators...never mind that complaint because I have the ability to overcome the CG's lack of capability and its my fault for having such unrealistic expectations.

If the CG WIFI sucks (and don't tell me the CG management doesn't know it), don't advertise it and no one will be offended or disappointed.

Video is the killer. It does not matter whether you want a news clip or a full movie. The bandwidth for that signal is significant when you are using it. Relatively speaking text is no problem.

This is a good point that is often overlooked. If you're watching cute animal videos on Facebook or Skyping with your grandchildren you're basically using as much bandwidth as someone watching Netflix. Although there are differences in resolution, etc, for the most part video is video and the effects on the wifi system are pretty much the same.

I guess we are simple, BYOM (Bring Your Own Movies) and satellite (local channels included). For internet news and searches, we use Verizon hotspots from our cell phones. In very rare instances, we try the CG Wi-Fi but that mostly fails for us.

And they should not.

I wish campgrounds had faster, more reliable WiFi, but generally they don't. Wishing they did does not change things.

So I (and most full timers I know) deal with it by carrying our own hotspots.

That's why some of us have satellite Internet as a fall back.

As a network engineer I can assure you that the vast majority of campground owners and managers rarely have have the knowledge to know how to track down the streamers or block them. In fact, most of them are downright technically inept. That said, internet technology has come a long ways in the last decade and there is little excuse for a campground not to have a 100+mb internet connection which can support the streamers with a little knowledgeable prioritization of the traffic.
The biggest cause of bandwidth problems in campgrounds is rarely the connection but the fact that most CGs being cheap, install small walmart routers which are designed to support 4-5 users and lack the processing power to even manage the throughput of the actual internet connection.

Haven't the sat providers like Hughes gone to spot beam making mobile sat internet extremely expensive now?

$100/month for 20GB -- see this.

COOL! I've seen that site before but it is lacking in much real information so I didn't see that product. It probably wouldn't do much for me with the data package I have through Verizon and so far we have either had that available or found places we can use their WIFI.

I totally agree with all your comments which is what had me so confused at Arizona Charlies in Las Vegas, NV, and the Golden Spike RV Park in Brigham City, UT. Both these parks have spent a bundle on what look like real quality access points. In fact, AZ Charlies has about six big antennas around the park. But, on our last trip both parks had serious issues with their bandwidth availability. I got around the issue at AZ Charlies by going into the rec room where the internet really screamed. The one bad day at Golden Spike had no alternatives. Most of the other parks we visited were so-so or non-existent. And they seemed to follow your comment about trying to provide internet on the cheap. So, to me they are not really trying.

And all this really hits the vacationing traveler the most. If we were full-timers I would have no problem forking over $80 to $100 a month for wireless service since that is comparable to what I spend at home. But, adding that much for occasional use gets a bit pricey. That is my real complaint.

100 MB incoming, 50 sites, 2 connections/site, more if there are kids along. Do the math.

While most of the CGs have nice Access points, They fail to put in a solid industrial quality router/firewall. Cisco access points do you little to no good if you are running a Linksys Walmart router. The roblem is that the routers rarely have the CPU to be able to process more than 30mb/second worth of data.
And the calculation doesn't work as simple as that northermark. If you are playing a Facebook game you may be using 200k of data every minute, while streaming netflix you might be using 2-3 megabytes of data. Internet bandwidth is totally dependent upon the program your running and how much information it needs to exchange with the server, also wether or not that traffic is TCP or UDP the latter of which has only 25% of the overhead. 100mb should support 200 users pretty easily if it's a solid connection.
