I've got Streets & Trips 2006. Someone posted some downloads (zip files) on RV.net that would allow you to locate Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, etc. I have the files but they are simply text files. How do I use them in Streets and Trips?

Open a new map in Streets and Trips. Go to Data > Import Data Wizard. When the file window comes up, negotiate to the folder where the unzipped data is. Select the file, click on it.
When the next window opens, it's asking what separator is, that thing that separates each field in data base. As far as I know, all the ones in the Discovery group are comma. You'll know when you've selected the right one, because the data will appear in the window in nice, neat columns.
Click next, if there are no column headings, like Latitude, Longitude, Name, etc, you have to use the drop down menus in each column to assign field names. Once that is done, click finish.
All the data will appear as black push pins. I don't like those, because they are too big. To change the push pin appearance, open the "Legend and Overview" pane. Right click on the push pin set you want to change, select properties, click the down arrow, and select a new push pin. By selecting a different push pin for each set, you can have one map with several sets. For example I have a map that has all the COE's, Passport America, and RPI parks. PA is small yellow circle push pin, COE is small black circle push pin, and RPI is small white circle push pin.
Make sense?

Bob:
Thanks. I'll give it a try. If I understand correctly, I will have to open/import each file (Cabela's, Cracker Barrel, Loves, etc.) whenever I want to add those to a particular trip/route map.

There is always a better way. :-)
Depending on how many groups you're going to add, put them all in, then save the file as a template.
I have templates saved to Campgrounds, and that's the one that has COE, PA, and RPI. Then I have a Costco, Loves, Flying J, Cracker Barrel, and a couple of others that I don't really care to put on a route, but want to know where they are when the jacks are down, or when I'm looking for a place to fuel in a given area.
Once you get the imports done, go to File, Save As, on the file type selection box, click the down arrow, and select Map Template (*.stt), and negotiate to the folder c:\Program Files\Microsoft Streets and Trips\Templates and save the file with any name you want.
Now when you want to use that map, go to File, New, and select the map you want to see.

Thanks for the great info. I did the Flying J file following your directions with perfect results. Now, another question.
I already have a route file, with about 20 stops, that I would like to add all of the Flying Js to. Is that possible?

The only way, without a lot, and I mean a lot, of work, is to just import the entire file.

Bob,
Thanks for the instructions on importing data to Streets and Trips. I didn't realize it was possible. Sure makes planning a trip and knowing possible layover and fueling stops easier.

I downloaded a list of Flying J locations from their website. After claning it up a little I have it in Excel format. It contains more information than I had from the other file. For example, it lists the actual address, RV dumps and propane availabilty.
If anybody wants a copy, send me an email.
I also found if you have a route already you can import a file such as this right into it.
