Tailgater & Wally users - What say you?

Replacing my old KVH dome with a King Tailgater (DT4400) and the Wally receiver with an exterior hard drive for DVR. (Dish, cuz thats what is in the sticks 'n bricks). Getting it with the quick release roof mount and a tripod for when we park under trees. We only need one receiver, we seldom use front and back TVs at the same time.

I have heard rave reviews about the Tailgater/Wally combo, but there are anecdotes that list some downsides:
  • Excessive time required to acquire satellites
  • Dome "hunts" for satellites even when receiver and TV are off
  • DVR can't be used to watch stored programs when there is no satellite reception
  • Dome is susceptible to water intrusion

Those of you running this combo - what has been your experience?

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts before I click on the "complete purchase" button!

Have been using a Winegard Pathway X1 and Dish PayasYouGo for years and recently switched to Wally. I connect the antenna upon arrival and have TV by the time we are set up. Never had a problem with water intrusion, but think the Pathway is more water resistant than the Tailgater. Use the Dish App "DishForMyRV" it only shows Dish satellites and does not need Internet to work. Do not have a DVR. Yes the system updates at night, but have not found that objectionable. PM with contact if you want to discuss

We have the same equipment you are contemplating buying. We have had no problems. Just need a clear view of the satellites.

We can access previously recorded shows on our DVR without a satellite signal.

Receivers are never really off. So not sure what you are saying. They are always listening just incase the satellite company sends the disable (you didn't pay for bill) signal.

Our old back up antennae was a Tail Gator, so didn't get used much unless the Traveler was blocked by trees. Never leaked.

Our current backup, an X2, again isn't used much, but never leaked so far.

We have the same setup that you are contemplating, but have only had it for a couple of months. We love it so far. The roof mount is great for relocating the receiver when under the trees. Haven't had any leaks. We always unplug the Wally when we move and plug it in first thing when we arrive so search time doesn't bother us and the dish doesn't search while on the road. We also love the pay as you go option as the MH is currently sleeping for a couple of months.

Good luck with your research!
