Don't know how you could have missed all the advertisements.
It's the latest and greatest phone from VZW.

It's Verizons new phone with Google and applications. My son just bought one and it has a free built in GPS voice activated, I've seen online that you can tether your laptop and get free G3 wireless. Wondering if anyone has done it.

VZW states you can tether it, but data on the handset or tethered will not be free.

You pay upfront for the data plan. There is software out there that lets you tether at no additional cost. The voice recognition software is fantastic even wit my Philly accent!

I don't hear see no accent.
Many phones can be tethered for free, but once VZW finds out, that'll be the end of it.

EVDO Alex....Can you chime in here and give us your best answer? This little creature is on my "want" list because it does have GPS built in. (I could have used it this past trip through Southern CA). I would be much more inclined to invest in this phone if I knew absolutely if it can be tethered and how I would do it with all the other stuff I ordered from 3GStore ( Wilson's Antenna & Amp along with the Cradlepoint Router)

I'm not Alex, but I'm familiar with the Droids. I have an HTC Droid Eris, not a Motorola Droid, however.
Neither of those Droids can yet be tethered "legally". I.e., Verizon has announced that they will offer tethering sometime this quarter for an additional $29.99/month. That's in addition to the $29.99/mo data plan Verizon requires on these devices.
A lot of folks are currently using PDAnet to tether their Droids without paying the extra $29.99 tethering fee. There are hundreds of postings here: ( PdaNet -- USB Tether/Bluetooth DUN for Android) arguing about whether Verizon can detect tethering, whether Verizon cares, and whether they will do anything about it when they do detect it.
My Cradlepoint CTR350 does not recognize my Droid. It's hard to see how a router could include the drivers for a phone that wasn't invented before the router was manufactured. Maybe Cradlepoint will eventually issue firmware updates including Droids for one or more of their routers.

According to several threads here, yes it can be tethered.

I was going to post a thread about this very subject, but did a search first to see if it had been discussed already, so here I am.
I recently bought the Motorola Droid and have Verizon. I installed PDA Net on my Dell laptop and my Droid and connect the two with a USB tether. It works perfectly. I'm excited because this now gives me an internet connection in parks where no Wi-Fi is available, as long as I have cell reception. The tether also charges my Droid when connected to the laptop.

This is GREAT news. I bought my DROID in January, but hadn't taken the time to find out if this would work. Thanks for the info!

I have been successful in Tethering my Motorola Droid. I am on Verizon and I am using PDAnet from June Fabrics. When I bought the Droid the Verizon rep said they would have tethering by the end of 1st Quarter 2010 I don't think it is going to happen. The Droid data account is unlimited (no 5 Gig limit) and since PDAnet looks just like any other web site connection I am not sure if Verizon will crack down once they are offering tethering.
There is a free trial of PDAnet but after 30 days you can't connect using https (secure) unless you buy the software ($24.00).
Since I have more than one computer in the coach I need to share the internet connection to a network in the coach that also has printers and network attached storage. I have a Cradlepoint MBR 1000 but it does not support the Droid or PDAnet, so right now I am forced to use Windows 7 Internet Connection Sharing to connect to the network. One advantage that PDAnet provides is that it will give the computer an internet connection regardless of how the phone is connected to the internet (3g, WiFi or VPN). That means that I don't need to change the Window 7 ICS setup if I have WiFi instead of cellular connectivity on the phone.
