The care and feeding of apps (& other software)

I know I make my own problems. I have and maintain the following:
- Desktop PC with Windows XP (with Win-8 ready to install), and Xubuntu
- Notebook with Windows 7
- Netbook with Xubuntu
- Nook Color tablet with Nook OS, and Android for Nook
- LG smartphone with Android

Almost every day, there is at least one app upgrade, or a Windows or Ubuntu update, or Firefox, or Flash, or whatever. When we travel or are home for a short time (like now), I use a mobile broadband internet connection. I pay by use, normally 1 Gb/month. Lately, I have had to up my plan to 2 Gb, and that's barely enough to feed all these hungry data dependents and still do usual internet stuff. I had to go to the library to get a 2+ Gb Garmin map update because of the size and time to download.

I think I'll name my gizmos as dependents on my 1040 this year.

I believe you can run Windows and Windows software in MacOS with a special installation program or process. I wonder if you can run Android and Xubuntu on a Mac also?
Sorry folks, been down the Mac road and it didn't go where I wanted to go. I had an iPhone and had to install iTunes on my Win-XP. Hated it, sold the iPhone, got the Android, and am a happy camper.
Different strokes for difficult folks, as they say (sort of).

p.s. Just installed Windows 8. Wow. I'm thinking, all right! So far.

Just as an FYI, iPhones no longer require iTunes or any computer connected to patch, activate and so forth. Just WiFi or a data plan.

A Mac can use boot camp and be a full fledged PC without using virtualization products like VMWare fusion. I've used both.

All that said, I've spent my years using both on a daily basis. My career is in information technology. Mac has proven to be less troublesome except in the case of applications specifically optimized to be windows only. PCs have become much more stable since windows 7 and don't suffer from the perennial slowdowns of Windows XP that typically had me re-image my machine every 24 months or so to improve productivity.

For either, consider an SSD drive, especially if portable. Encrypt your hard drive to protect your data if it was ever to be stolen from your RV. Use a secure password. Consider products such as this one. https://agilebits.com/onepassword. If backup to the "cloud" (Dropbox, etc) isn't an option, purchase a portable hard drive with hardware encryption and enable daily backups or weekly (minimum). I've never had to restore from a backup on my macs in 20 years. I have with PCs and have helped others do the same, including one Mac. Regardless, either platform uses the same drive manufacturers and they fail at the same rates. A drive failure is not a question of "if" but "when". Digital photos of family are not replaceable if they are lost.

Finally, if using a laptop, this is one case where extended warranties are worth it. All corporate locations I have been at buy 3 year warranties and replace systems by year 4. Failure rates really jump up in year 5. We have stats to prove it and have over 30,000 machines in production as I write. Macs seem to buck that trend but I still typically sell them on Craigslist in year 4 after multiple wipes of the hard drive at low level formatting/ secure delete to prevent identity theft. (We have one mac @ 5 years old still in the house at the moment; another @ 2 years old). Realistic, quick resale price tends to be around 1/3rd of new.

Doesn't really help. Mac apps have updates too, and the App Store has updates for me daily. We're 100% Mac here, but I think it's misleading to imply that the volume of updates for applications is all that much different.

OTOH, I think much of the OP's issues are because he has so many different OS's on different platforms, and they all have different updates. Standardizing on one platform would help.

And don't forget that there are APPS for APPS. You can't get away from the updates.

DW has the original iPad. Once in a while she'll let me look at it to explain how something works. At that time I'll do the APPStore and update her apps. Doesn't seem to hurt the system if they are not done any any timely manner. Just wait until you get to a "hotspot."
