TRACFONE International Neighbors

Tracfone use to have a feature that allowed people to have a Canadian and USA phone number. If someone in Canada wanted to call me, they had my local Canadian number to call and did not have to call long distance. Tracfone now has the plan for Mexico only I understand. Does anyone know of any other pay as you go cell plans that have International Neighbors feature? I can not believe Tracfone just dropped the plan without notice.

They still list it as an option in thier legal terms and conditions document.

"4. INTERNATIONAL CALLS
You may now use your TRACFONE to make international calls to landlines (including some cellular phones in some countries) at no additional charge (See TracFone Wireless | Prepaid Cell Phone | Pay As You Go | No Contract Cell Phone for available countries and details). The available countries are subject to change without prior notice. In order to place an international call, you will need to dial the international long distance access number 1-800-706-3839 and follow the instructions. From Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands you will need to dial 305-938-5673 as the international long distance access number. Airtime deductions for international calls begin the moment the International Long Distance ("ILD") access number is dialed and apply to dropped calls, misdialed numbers and busy destination numbers. When making international calls, you may experience connection failures more frequently than calls made within the United States. TracFone Wireless will not credit airtime minutes deducted for unsuccessful calls. You will not be able to make or receive calls on your TRACFONE when you are located outside of the United States, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

TRACFONE International Neighbors is a service that enables callers in Mexico and Canada to set up a local number to ring on a TRACFONE in the US. (Please call 1-800-867-7183 for details)."

Found out more. A CSR stated on thier support site that "Existing customers who already have numbers assigned in the Canadian regions will keep them. However, going forward, the program will no longer honor any NEW number assignments in this region for new subscribers. Thank you."

You should be ok if you already had the numbers setup.

I had the service in Canada for close to four years. Travelled in July last year and it worked with no problems but was gone in early October. Calling the Canadian number resulting in nothing connecting. They may say it is still available to existing customers but that was definitely not my experience. Typically, if the service was not used every 30 days, you lost the number as the service was in high demand in Canada. While that information might still exist in their legal documents, every reference to Canada was removed from the service description on their website last Fall. Too bad, it was a great service and a differentiator for Tracphone.
