If I understand it correctly the LM requires an IRD and there are different ones depending upon the service you use. According to their owners manual:
To make full use of your new TracVision LM and receive satellite TV on the road, you will need to provide/purchase the following:
Appropriate IRD for your selected satellite
TV service (if using the DISH Network, a
Series 4000 or 5000 IRD will be required)
Optional KVH EchoStar Adapter (for use with
the DISH Network service and IRD)

Is you Dish receiver a 4000 or 5000 as required? DirecTV stopped making receivers with low speed data ports about 5 years ago.
If you have not workable option for the LM you are likely going to have to get hold of KVH or a KVH dealer and have the antenna hardware updated.

If you have a laptop with terminal software and a serial port you can manually tune the dish for reception. I am currently doing it. If you have the manual find the section for terminal settings and establish a connection to the dish via your serial cable.
The settings are 9600 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 start bit, 1 stop bit, no data control.
Turn on the system <cr> and you will see a scrolling of init strings.
1)Type HALT <cr>
2)Type EL,xxx <cr> (xxx is the desired elevation based on info from the zip code - the three digits represents degrees elevation to the 10th. DO NOT include the . Example 42 degrees would be entered as 420.)
3)Determine the desired azimuth by calculating the difference between the front of your coach as if it were NORTH. Example you coach is facing 20 deg, and the desired azimuth is 230 deg a 20 degree adjustment will point you to the satellite.
4)Type AZ,2300 <cr> (Again the fourth digit is 1/10 degree)
5)Watch your signal meter, continue to change the Azimuth and Elevation until you get a good signal.
A little practice and you can still use your equipment in spite of what KVH tells you.

I have an old Dell laptop running XP. The terminal build is M/S Hyperterminal v5.1.
Any terminal program should work eg. Procom and others I can't recall.
Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

I finally have Hyperterminal talking to the L2/S2 dish however I can not get the keyboard to work. In other words I can not type commands. Since the dish is not seeing the correct satellite and pushing the sat select switch will not get dish to move I need to move dish by commands. Any ideas on why I cannot type

Either one of two possibilities..
1. You have the comm port setup for hardware handshake and it needs to be turned off.
2. Or you need to turn on echo.

Thanks I will check those out. Found out I can type the commands, just cannot see the letters. So thinking the echo will work.

The dish is not smart enough to echo commands. You just have to type and <cr> to execute the command. You will know it is working if you type halt <cr> and the init string stops scrolling on your terminal. Sometimes when I type EL,XXX <cr> a line comes up indicating the system must reboot. Let it start to reboot again and then type halt<cr> again.
I think you will find this will work if your dish is actually in working order. A little practice with the AZ command will allow you to fine tune the satellite. I usually increase or decrease the AZ by 2 degrees either higher or lower until I start getting a signal.
Good Luck

Last night I was able to talk to the dish. However now i found out i have to unplug the dish box for it to look at satellite after the dish moves. Now when I open Hyperterminal all of the com ports are still "in use" so I can not communicate to dish. I have not been able to get the ports disconnected through device manager etc. using windows XP. Any ideas?

Not sure why you need to unplug the DTV box. I just open signal strength meter and watch it until I start seeing a reading. Also, don't understand ports being in use. Have you tried a reboot? You should not have any connection to the dish from the box but the coax. My dish has two serial cables coming in, one was for box communication and the other was for maintenance. Connect your computer to the maintenance cable if you have two.
