Well, we finally did it...got a cell phone. We didn't want to, but it's good to have a phone on the road (in case I have to call Good Sam).

We got the Trac Phone which seems great as it's a pay-as-you-go system. The phone and 200 minutes was only $37 with shipping. Should be here on Wednesday. To get more minutes, all we have to do is go to Wal*Mart and buy more or go on the Internet and buy more. Seems like a much better deal than paying $60 a month for something we won't use that much.

Anyone else have experience with Trac?

We have had one for four years. It is a good extra phone to have if you dont talk on it alot. It is not our primary cell phone. Runs about $10 a month for 20 minutes a month. Cards can be got at walmart and then use their websight to recharge the phone's minutes every two months.

We're getting a 200-minute card with the phone. Does that mean I can recharge that card on-line? That would be convenient.

We don't make a lot of calls. My DW calls her sisters sometimes and that can be a marathon.

You dont exactly recharge a card, but you buy another. Also you can buy minutes on-line (which is a series of codes you add to the phone). You can buy minutes on-line if you are willing to use one of your credit cards to make an online purchase. We buy our cards at walmart with cash or check and then go on-line to redeem them. Another way to redeem the card is by telephone. We buy 60 day cards that have 40 minutes for about $19 (so it comes out to $9.50 per month). At end of sixty days we must redeem another card even if we have minutes left, but our unused minutes roll over and dont expire. It is not our primary phone so our monthly useage is always less than 20 minutes. Our rollover ballance is usually several hundred minutes.

If you plan on higher usage, larger cards can be purchased with more minutes and longer amount of days before expiring and you can get "one-year service" cards that will go a year before expiring as long as you dont run out of minutes. When you buy larger clumps of minutes the cost per minute is less. Go to

www.tracfone.com

for better explaination and to find which plan best fits your usage.

We recently updated our old tracfone which we have had for four years to a new tracfone model. I had a 412 minute ballance on the old phone and was worried I would lose it. I called them and they transfered the minutes to the new phone. They have pretty good customer service but all have an Indian accent so I suspect you are calling half way around the world for customer service, but everybody outsources to India nowdays it seems.

I've had a trac phone now for two years and have been able to get a signal just about everywhere. I buy my units (minutes) on line once a year. Cheaper that way. Averages out to about $7 a mounth. Don't use it alot, but sure is handy to have now and then.

Well, we got it and it's been programmed. It sure is small and too many doo-dads. Programming the message part is not all that simple. The thing we dislike most about the phone is the size. My wife has to use a magnifier to read the numbers. Actually, I do too when inside dealing with incadescent light.

We bought a 300-minute annual card at Wal*Mart. We found that it was cheaper than buying it on-line. Somehow, don't exactly know how, after doing the card on-line, we ended up with 420 minutes.

I tested it out today while out and I got "No Service" in a couple of places, but that's because of where we're located. The local government has too many restrictions on cell antennae so the companies don't want to build any here.
