That was the trick I was looking for. I’m now able to transfer from my dvd disc to the flash stick with ease. I’ll keep the dvd disc as my backup of course. Once again , thanks to all who responded.
I’ve been operating exclusively on an iPhone and mini iPad for years and now found a good use for the laptop. I’ll most likely find more. An old dog can still learn the simple tricks he never bothered to previously learn .

There are many free programs that can show you better previews than Windows Explorer thumbnail view.
Two that I've used are Xnview or FastStone Image Viewer. If you happen to have Photoshop the included Bridge software is also easy to use.
Whatever camera you're using, the manufacturer usually provides free software for managing your photos.
The procedure is the same on all of those programs, set the view so you can see the previews, select the ones you want to keep and then copy and paste to wherever you want to store them.
Once you copy them to your thumb drive be sure to open them up and make sure they all transferred and then before deleting the original on your computer back them up onto another drive or two.

Try FastStone Viewer when you get a chance. You can easily adjust colors, resize, crop, and straighten the horizon ... lots of other easy to use stuff.

Something you may consider along with transferring to a flash stick is online storage. There are several free options. These can be private so you have control of who sees what.
Google Photos unlimited if you let them compress or 10gig for originals
Amazon (If Prime Member) unlimited photo storage, access is clunky though I have heard.
I am sure there are others but these I am aware of. I use Google photos as a temp storage between iPhone and iPad to the permanent locations.
Having instant access to all your photos can be nice when away from your laptop. I am paranoid with my photos and have multiple backups and everything online. My family accesses the old photos on a regular basis.

Thanks Steve. The main reason is so my DW can view them on her new Digital picture frame. I have most of my photos stored on line and backed up on disc.

If you're going to use the DVD as a HD (which you can), make sure you get the -RW version. This way you can delete stuff from the disk also.

Make sure you format the USB drive to match the Picture Frame. Try a few pics before you spend time transferring all the pics.

I agree online is the way to go. I have an Iphone for my camera and all my pictures are auto loaded up to google photos for free. I can delete what I do not want anymore and share what I do want.

The Picture Frame should have some instructions regarding what file system is expected. It will likely be NTFS or FAT32. If it is a new USB drive it may already be formatted and usable.
