If you do that I suggest as others did, to put a 1"x1' frame around the edges for additional support. Pre-drill the holes shallow and if it is going to be permanent, then add some wood glue around the back and edges of the frame so it is really solid. Measure very closely as to how far back the mount will put the TV when the tv is secured if the slide clearance is an issue. Also, the vertical height of a tv when mounting. A normal flat screen 40" is about 36" wide and about 21" high. Most are about 2 inches deep.
I put two horizontal 2x4's across the cabinet secured with 'L' brackets with 8 screws per bracket, and glue, then got a mount with a latch when closed that keeps the tv within a quarter inch of the cabinet.
