Sounds like the channels that fill the screen are transmitting in HD and the ones with borders are transmitting is SD (Standard Definition). There may be an option in your TV's settings that will zoom/stretch the tv picture to fill the screen on those channels.

Hi emil2,
wildtoad has the correct answer. Determine how to access the setup or settings on the TV. See if there is an automatic setting for the picture to fill the screen. If not, one will need to choose the setting that best fits what you usually watch. If you want to fill the screen during all programs, you'll be accessing the settings on your TV quite a bit.

It really depends on how old the tv is. A 2005 model may not have all the bells and whistles on the tv, or the remote. The newer models, and you can check yours, has a remote with a function capability that will flick between a "stretch" mode and a "normal" mode. When the SD picture has the outside edge black box, you can press that button and it will change through a couple modes. like normal, zoom, stretch, etc.

Check the book with the remote, and if you don't have the book just Google the remote model # either on the back of the remote, or inside the battery compartment of the remote. The manual should tell you which button will, if any, do what you want it to do.

The HD broadcasts should fill up the screen in "normal" mode.

p.s., the stretch mode makes people look a little fatter, so if you are showing friends pictures from your camera, and ladies are in the pictures, do not use the stretch mode. You will not hear the end of your picture taking capabilities.

Our remote has a stretch button. The black box is in the center of the screen. It covers about 75 % of the screen the picture is running behind it. You can see the outline of the picture. It only happens on some programs not all the programs on the same channel. If we lower or rasied the volumn on the TV remote the black box goes away for about 2 minutes then comes back.

Emil2,

That's sounds like a different problem altogether. Is this correct... You have an older RCA TV (tube) not a new flat panel? The box you refered to in the initial post is that a digital converter box? If so which brand? Does your RV have two tv's and does it happen on both?

Try going to the tv menu. Highlight functions. Set the close caption to CC3.

I believe we have the same RCA television in our Safari. I had the same issue before the signals went digital. The menu I'm referring to is the set-up for the television. It will be easier to access it with the tv remote or the buttons on the front of the tv. Hope this helps.
