I replaced and relocated the original overhead CRT television in our motorhome with a 26 inch LCD Vizio flat screen last spring.
I am having a problem with the TV shutting off, creen just goes black, after about one hour and forty five minutes of operating it on my inverter. The TV will turn back on when I use the on/off switch, but will only play about another thirty minutes, and does the same thing again. Can turn it on again, but only for a few minutes, and the goes off again.
I use a Xantac 400 Watt inverter, believe it a modified sine wave. Inverter is on dedicated circuit, and powers only TV, Dirctv reciever, and DVD player. Battery voltage from my two T105 Trojans shows good, and meter shows 117 volts on TV power circuit. The TV has no problems while operating on shore power, or on aux power, I have had it on for over three hours.
Any ideas? Could modified sine wave power be a problem for the TV. It almost seems like an internal breaker in the TV cuts off the power.
Other than above problem, which I was not aware of until recent boondock outing, I am very happy with new set, and location.

Problem seems to be related to the inverter or the batteries instead of the TV. If possible, try another inverter and see what happens.
Although btry voltage shows good with a meter, it may in fact be low when under the load of the above mentioned electronics causing the inverter to shut down because of low voltage. Another clue to low voltage is that the TV will come back on for a short period after operating the on/off switch. Good luck...

Your tv's power supply is probably becoming hot due to the Modified Sine Wave, and it has a automatic shut down circuit built in. Find out what the power requirements for your tv is and then maybe try and locate a true sinewave inverter that can handle that power. It's probably going to be around 100 to 150 watt range. If it works then just use the sine wave inverter, if it doesn't work then take the sine wave inverter back for a refund.
A lot of the latest electronic equipment now being built is more critical to good clean power. Many pieces of equipment now require true sine wave, and stipulate not to operate this device from modified sine wave inverters.

I think Bob has hit the nail on the head. LCD tvs get fairly hot and most have an overheat shutdown built in. Modified sine power often causes the power supply to run hotter than usual and this may be enough to kick your tv off after awhile. You can either improve the ventilation or try a pure sine inverter.

Improving the ventilation might help in the short term, but if it's really the modified sine wave power that's causing the problem, you're probably going to burn out the power supply in the TV in short order. If the TV wants pure sine wave, you better switch inverters or stop watching while on battery power.

Your post doesn't indicate loss of inverter power to other components.
If there is also loss of power to them, I would suspect low battery state of charge OR insufficient wire size leading to the inverter. Thus causing inverter to sense low voltage and self shutdown. --- Or possibly bad inverter.
Otherwise tv may just be too sensitive to inverter waveform.
Any number of LCD monitors I've run on my MSW inverter has caused no problems.
The only thing I have had trouble with was a Sonic Care tooth brush recharger.

Thanks for all the input on my TV problem guys.
The inverter power does not go off, as I use Directv receiver on the same circuit, and it does not lose power. I am thinking maybe the set does not like the power from the inverter. The set does seem to produce a lot of heat from either inverter or line voltage. It is though there is a built in circuit breaker in the set. I have an inquiry in to Vizio tech support, but no answer yet. I used this same inverter on my CRT Panasonic TV for about 4 years with no problems, it has plenty of power for the LCD according to the power requirements in the specs for the set. Will wait till I hear from Vizio before replacing inverter. Any one have a reccomendation for a pure sine wave small inverter? I only use it for the TV and DVD player along with Satellite reciever. 300 watts is more than enough.
Thanks again,
Dieselclacker

Dieselcracker,
I went through this same problem when installing a small freezer/refrigerator in a storage bay. I used a 2000 watt, modified sine wave inverter. It ruined the Fridge/Freezer and the inverter. I returned both, got a new Freezer/ fridge and installed a 1000 Watt Cotek ( see here)pure sine wave inverter ($450) and oversized the suggested cables. All is well now. I suggest you dump the modified sine wave inverter and go to a quality pure sine wave inverter.
You can see my attempt with the MSW inverter here.

I have 2 HDTV LCD TV's (19" and 22") running off my whole house 2000 watt MSW Heart inverter. I have had one TV for about 3 months and one for about 1 month. I have not seen any kind of problems with the LCD and a MSW inverter.

Bill, I have to believe that the input design and component quality in the power supplies that go into these electronics determines how well they will tolerate MSW. What brand HDTVS do you have?
The only component I had fail in the last 12 years using my 1500W MSW Heart Inverter has been a tooth brush battery recharger. A identical replacement charger has been working fine for the last 3 years.

Vizio is a low priced LCD - I suspect they skimped a bit on the power supply and self-protection circuitry. No doubt it works fine on standard 120 VAC but maybe is not so tolerant of MSW as another brand might be.
I have a Sony and a Samsung LCD in the coach and both seem OK running on my Xantrex 2500 watt MSW inverter.
