Thanks Wayne M, Don and Dale - I did as you all suggested and VLC worked.

I have now uninstalled QuickTime.

Very much appreciate your help.

A question for the tech gurus about Quicktime. Do you know what part of the software is subject to attack? The reason I ask is I have a video editing program that requires Quicktime be installed to process .mov video files.

If I just remove the Quicktime .exe files will that remove the avenue of attack? I really don't want to change video editing software and I have a lot of .mov files. The software will work without the .exe files because I just tried it, so it's using some of the .dll files or another avenue to interpret the .mov files. I don't use Quicktime to play video, just to use it as an interpreter for the editing software, so getting rid of the player function is not a problem.

Lt Dan,
Something to READ

If you never visit the internet that has a malicious code....well....and the question is would a good firewall protect you. Have you thought of a cheap second computer that you do not connect to the internet that you can run your video program on?

No firewall is immune to an attack but they do help.

Thanks for the information. I do have the software on an older second computer not connected to the internet, but the newer one runs the video processing much faster. I may follow your suggestion and just use it to do all processing.

I do have a firewall, virus software and run malwarebytes to clean up any malicious software on this computer. I have also been in contact with the software manufacturer to see if any newer versions are going to eliminate the need for Quicktime and hoping they will do so.

Dan,
Just remember that no anti-virus software is immune from a "new" virus attack. It take a little time for the anti-virus software makers to update their databases. The better anti-virus program out there is one that has the heuristic built into their software. I personally use Norton Internet Security which contains anti-virus software and firewall software.

The only safe computer is one in a vault with no wires of any kind going into it, no wireless or blue tooth features and a guard standing at the vault door. Then the only question is, can you trust the guard?
