We use the I phone in Canada (Rogers) and the same I phone in the US we use the AT&T "Go Phone" pay as you go for $50.00 a month you get unlimited calling, and unlimited data for another $10.00 you can get 250 minutes of international calling to Canada. This has worked well for us for the last 3 years

Again, one of the better bargains in an unlocked GSM phone is an iPhone 4 or 4S. There are many of these available on Ebay and elsewhere at attractive prices due to trade-ins on the iPhone 5. If the phone is not already unlocked then AT&T will unlock it as long as it is not on contract (actually they transmit an OK to unlock to Apple and the process is done through iTunes.) The iPhone 4 takes a micro SIM instead of the standard size, but the micro SIM has become a pretty standard format and all the carriers have them, or if you already have a standard size SIM it is trivial to cut it down to the 'micro' size.

Sure, the guts and contact pattern are the same on both the SIM and micro SIM so if you trim the standard down it will work just fine. There are little trimmer devices available but if you are careful you can just trim it by hand.
